Purpose :

Cat Digital’s Artificial Intelligence team is looking for a talented and motivated Lead Data Scientist to deliver ML/AI-based analytics to support product development for the enterprise as well as condition monitoring for customers. As a Lead Data Scientist, you will use machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, and other analytics techniques on time-series machine sensor data and other data to better understand data patterns, failure modes, device health anomalies, and more. 

JOB DUTIES:

Caterpillar uses quantitative methods such as business simulations, data mining, modeling, statistical techniques, and Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence capabilities to solve real problems.

The Lead Data Scientist will:

  • Demonstrate a breadth and depth of knowledge in the application of ML/AI methods and digital technology knowledge to solve complex business problems
  • Coach and mentor Jr. Data Scientists in the creation, validation, and application of statistical models as well as in implementing digital solutions
  • Participate on 3-4 projects concurrently
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of Caterpillar Inc.; its products and services; its internal systems, processes, and procedures; and its relevant external influences (competitors, laws and regulations, market conditions, etc.)
  • Exhibit strong initiative to research and apply new methods and digital technologies to exceed customer expectations.
  • Demonstrate strong customer focus in the application of Analytics techniques and digital technologies to solve business problems
  • Develop good networks within the technical community to enable them to collaborate on technical solutions, obtain resources and cooperation needed, and remove roadblocks so that they can ensure the success of their team.
  • Present very good communication skills, being able to explain conclusions to customers with limited knowledge and experience with quantitative analytical methods. 
  • Show significant knowledge in the use of Data Analytics software solutions
  • Have a strong focus on continual learning in the Analytics field

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Requires a Master's degree, preferably in engineering, computer science, statistics, mathematics, or a similar field with quantitative coursework, and 6+ years of professional experience utilizing quantitative analysis is required, or a PhD and 4+ years of experience in relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of experience applying python (NumPy, SciPy, scikit-learn, pandas, etc.) programming to solve technical and business challenges.
  • 3+ years of experience applying AI/ML to solve technical and business challenges.
  • 1+ years of experience with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, etc.)

TOP CANDIDATE WILL ALSO HAVE:

  • Masters, or PhD degree in Aerospace, Applied Statistics, Business Analytics, Business Intelligence & Analytics, Computer Science, Computer Science + X, Engineering (various), Informatics, Information Systems Management, Mathematics, MBA with Technical Undergrad, Predictive Analytics, Statistics, or equivalent technical degree.
  • Demonstrated capability to take initiative and lead in the presence of ambiguity to deliver innovative solutions
  • Experience in Generative AI
  • Experience in design / development of heavy equipment (ex. automotive, aerospace, engine, transmission, construction, mining, industrial, etc)
  • Experience working in a software development environment using GIT, SVN, AZDO, Clearcase, etc
  • Good communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills

Additional Details:

This position has the option to be based out of either our Chicago, IL; Peoria, IL or Champaign, IL offices with a flexible hybrid work environment.
