The eCommerce Analytics team of Cat Digital is seeking a talented and motivated Data Scientist to develop analyses that drive insights to our Aftermarket Services eCommerce business. We serve as business partners to the Business teams as well as the Site Product Management teams to answer questions and deliver insights that can help drive and grow our eCommerce business.

Our analyses apply financial data as well as behavioral data of how end customers are using our eCommerce sites to identify opportunities. This role will require a skillset in advanced statistical modeling and data science techniques combined with a business sense that allows the successful candidate to deliver meaningful results to our business teams.

JOB DUTIES:

Caterpillar uses quantitative techniques to solve problems. Typical problems include maximizing OPACC through improvements in Inventory Costs, Material Costs, NPI costs, etc.; determining the principal drivers of health care costs; recommending the optimal supplier for a part; identifying sales, rental, and service opportunities for Caterpillar dealers; and developing simulation/optimization capabilities to model a new facility or product feature. In addition, analytics experts also provide assistance to high-profile enterprise-wide projects such as the Engineered Value Chain.

The principal responsibility of the Data Scientist II is to be an independent contributor to multi-person analytic teams. This position has a depth of knowledge in quantitative analytic methods, data management, and or associated digital technologies suitable to handle all but the most complex issues. The individual is expected to be familiar with the company’s processes, products, and organization, as well as its customers, competitors, and stakeholders. Work is typically directed by a direct supervisor, project or team lead through a review of results. Challenges include meeting expectations in delivering results, learning to refine solutions to better fit complex situations, making timely decisions, and communicating effectively with all project stakeholders.

The Data Scientist II demonstrates thorough knowledge of statistical approaches, data management techniques, and/or related digital technologies, and the ability to handle complex issues. The Data Scientist also demonstrates very good communication and presentation skills, being able to explain conclusions to customers who have limited knowledge and experience with quantitative analytical methods.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.S. in data science, computer science, applied mathematics/statistics, engineering, physics, or similar field with quantitative coursework
  • 4-5 years work experience in quantitative analysis and/or software development (or M.S. plus 2-3 years, or Ph.D.)
  • Strong Python skills for data science (NumPy, Pandas, Pspark, Pytorch, Keras, etc.)

TOP CANDIDATES WILL ALSO HAVE:

  • The ideal candidate will have two years of experience in an eCommerce environment, applying advanced analytics to eCommerce metrics and developing web insights. 
  • Advanced business knowledge and skills: performing analyses that answer questions in a manner that addresses business problems
  • Bachelors, Masters, or PhD degree in Applied Statistics, Data Science, Business Analytics, Business Intelligence & Analytics, Computer Science, Computer Science + X, Informatics, Information Systems Management, Mathematics, MBA with Technical Undergrad, Predictive Analytics, Statistics, or equivalent technical degree.
  • Experience with advanced data analysis and statistical methods such as regression, hypothesis testing, ANOVA, statistical process control, etc.
  • Practical applications of machine learning techniques such as Clustering, Logistic Regression, CART, Random Forests, SVM or Neural Networks.
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills and evidence of continuous learning in the analytics field
  • 2+ years of experience applying python (NumPy, SciPy, pandas, etc.) programming to solve business challenges
  • Experience with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, Snowflake, Google Cloud, etc.)
  • Strong initiative to research and apply new methods and digital technologies to exceed customer expectations.
  • Must demonstrate strong initiative, interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate effectively.

Additional Details:

This position has the option to be based out of either our Chicago, IL or Peoria, IL offices with flexibility for partial work from home.
