Job Title: Data Scientist – Engine Research

Salary: £48,648 - £52,500 (Depending on Experience)

Location: Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

Benefits: 25 days annual leave,

Up to 12% Bonus

  • The Opportunity

We currently have a new and exciting opportunity for a Data Scientist to support the development of new analytics approaches within Caterpillar’s Energy and Transportation Research team. We have access to more than a million connected machines and power systems; we want to turn that data into knowledge to better inform our future product development and bringing value to our customers

This innovative team is responsible for developing novel engineering solutions and processes, working collaboratively with Universities, internal and external industrial partners as well as with our US based sister team.

The team leads the powertrain research strategy and delivery for Caterpillar within Europe, this includes global research responsibility for electrification and hybridisation, systems integration and control.

Job Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Develop methodologies to perform cleaning and organisation of data received from in-field machines and engines, from simulation and from internally generated test data
  • Working closely with domain specialists, develop data based and physical models for use with data-streams within local and cloud-based computing environments.
  • Integration of code into cloud-based servers
  • Coordinate with software and controls specialists to facilitate them developing embedded controls models, interfaces and physical test and simulation tools, within a wider end-to-end product development, controls system and powertrain development process.
  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams (Physical test, Controls, Multi-scale modelling etc) to support continuous improvement of end-to-end product development process

Skills and Experience:

Candidates will have gained the following skills and experience through previous roles:

  • Requires an accredited degree (2:1 or above) or equivalent experience and excellent analytical skills.
  • Highly skilled in common tools and languages, demonstrated use of one or more of the following: Python/ R/ Tableau / ETL/ Sagemaker/AWS or similar
  • Familiarity with databases and use to analyse data rapidly and accurately, skilled in the use of one or more of the following examples: Hadoop/ SQL/ Oracle/ Snowflake or similar
  • Understanding of Statistical methods, machine learning and uncertainty quantification, both tools and mathematical theory.
  • Practical integration of Machine learning, Neural networks, classification / categorisation for determination of root cause and full population assessment

 Although this is primarily a data science role, we will provide additional job focussed training in areas such as:

  • Engines and power systems
  • Tribological systems.
