The position

As Expert Scientific Data Architect you will be responsible for the scoping and technical design of highly complex data products supporting key scientific capabilities in Novo Nordisk such as Disease Understanding, Lead Identification/Optimisation, or Laboratory Automation. You will lead the overall architecture design of scientific data products across multiple product teams each consisting of 5-10 members.

In this position, you will operate with high independence and act as the primary expert within own field and scope. You will lead and complete highly complex tasks with no or minimum supervision.

You will design the blueprints, enablers and platforms for data products that accelerate scientific analysis and in-silico experimentation. Data products often rely on advanced digital technologies such as machine learning, big data and visualization. Robust platforms and correct pipeline configurations are critical for the validity of scientific results and the effective execution of digital science.

Your key responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

• Develop and oversee data architecture visions, detailed blueprints, and roadmaps for enabling data products. Ensure compliance with data quality standards, privacy, and security policies.
• Build and maintain target architectures for new data products including database design, data processing, and data integrations. Accelerate adoption of the latest technology trends within the cloud and big data solutions.
• Scope and develop proof of concepts to demonstrate feasibility of new data driven solutions.
• Collaborate closely with scientific leads, data experts and SMEs to define relevant and effective solutions to scientific use cases and requirements from our scientific teams and projects.
• Plan for the structured creation/acquisition, storage, management, pipelining, and use of scientific data within the scope of one or more scientific capabilities.
• Stay current on technology trends such as database technologies, high performance computing, infrastructure as code and communicate their value and applicability within scientific research.
• Represent Novo Nordisk in conferences, industry working groups, and author or contribute to publications in relevant scientific journals.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you should have:

• Preferable MSc or Ph.D. in life science or computer science, and at least 10 years of experience within data architecture and/or Data Management in Scientific Research.
• Profound knowledge of big data technologies. Experience in designing and implementing modern data architectures such as data lakehouse, data mesh, data fabric, data modelling and design, including database development and administration.
• Previously worked as senior/lead data engineer, or have the ability to demonstrate hands on work developing data pipelines in either on-premise or cloud-based environments.
• Hands-on experience with object-oriented programming languages such as Scala, Java, and Python. Expertise in transactional, object, document, and graph databases.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Solves unique and complex problems that have a broad impact on the business. Recommends process, product, or service improvements. Operates with no supervision in a complex environment.

About the department

You will be part of the Scientific Architecture unit in Data Management & Informatics (DMI). DMI is responsible for providing scientific data and software products to support the global research and early development organisation at Novo Nordisk. Our work spans driving digitalisation of laboratories, enabling scientific data capture, creating harmonized data for analytics, and providing informatics tools. We enable disruptive innovation and data driven decision making across areas that include disease understanding, molecular design, portfolio management and external scouting.
