About the department

The AI and Analytics Team is part of Novo Nordisk’s Data Science division, where we apply sophisticated algorithms and machine learning techniques to some of the hardest problems in the discovery and development of new healthcare solutions. By leveraging a blend of scientific, problem-solving, and quantitative skills, we provide superior data insights that empower Novo Nordisk to further develop and deliver life-changing treatments. The Position

The Principal Data Scientist AI/ML is a unique position that sits at the junction of applied machine learning and biostatistics domains, contributing to the research team’s efforts towards exploring and innovating within our fields. As a Principal Data Scientist, you will bring elements of domain expertise and novel exploration in the machine learning space to explore prognostic and predictive models toward various drug development objectives.

Moreover, the Principal Data Scientist will, with support from Data Scientists and Engineers, contribute to the development and validation of such algorithms and models, and work closely with other departments including Biostatistics, Pharmacometrics and IT/engineering groups.

As Principal Data Scientist you will:

  • Apply relevant statistical, ML and AI methods to solve complex challenges in the pharmaceutical development space
  • Explore latest trends in drug development to innovate traditional clinical trial development strategies
  • Engage with stakeholders to understand challenges, identify areas of innovation, and build solutions using appropriate techniques
  • Help articulate the solutioning with a regulatory lens, designing experiments that help innovate around relevant scientific questions
  • Demonstrate an ability to take initiatives and drive projects from concept to adoption
  • Implement and maintain local and cloud-based data and computational environment to integrate data and solutions from different sources
  • Actively participate in cross-functional teams to develop multiple AI and ML solutions

The Principal Data Scientist AI/ML reports to the head of the related research area and will have a variety of internal and external stakeholders across US, Denmark and UK to understand challenges, identify areas of innovation, and build solutions using appropriate technologies.

Internal partners include data scientists, specialists, engineers, software developers, technology scouts & partnership developers, system engineers, designers, anthropologists, medical doctors, IT professionals, and others across US, Denmark and UK. External relationships include commercial and academic collaboration partners.

You will have extensive collaboration with data scientists, engineers and scientists from other disciplines to complete daily tasks and to design and iterate on solutions. 

Qualifications

  • A PhD with 3+ years of relevant experience is required; a Master’s degree with 5+ years of experience will be considered. Degrees within biostatistics, computer science, molecular biology, computational biology, or a related quantitative discipline preferred.

Relevant experience includes:

  • Deep knowledge and experience with classical statistical methods used in clinical trial design, planning and execution
  • Experience working in pharmaceutical industry, healthcare industry, regulated medical device development or in another regulated field
  • Experience innovating in areas such as trial design/planning, dose response modelling, virtual twins, structured exploration, cohort modelling, adaptive designs, and similar areas
  • Experience in advocating and deploying modern AI/ML alternatives to classical approaches of trial design and conduct
  • Experience with software development, including writing high quality code in Python or R, with knowledge in CDISC including SDTM, ADaM, and controlled terminologies 
  • Strong understanding and experience supporting regulatory submissions, interacting with the FDA and/or global regulatory authorities
  • Foster international academic / commercial partnerships
  • Work collaboratively across multiple disciplines to drive innovation

 Preferred experience includes:

  • Experience working with structured and unstructured multi-domain data from diverse sources
  • Experience working in a cloud environment/platform, preferably in AWS
  • Working experience in Software Development Lifecycles, agile methodologies, and continuous integration
  • Strong academic background with a demonstrated record toward innovation using modern ML/AI methods
