Who We Are:

The Electrified Powertrain section at SwRI conducts testing and applied research and development on battery, hybrid and fuel cell electric vehicles and their components. We work closely with our customers to provide data to support product design and development and evaluate new technologies to improve the safety, efficiency and performance of electrified powertrains. We serve passenger vehicle OEMs, heavy-duty vehicle OEMs, battery manufacturers, Tier 1 suppliers, aerospace and defense customers in a rapidly growing and changing landscape.

Objectives of this Role:

  • Help lead a team of engineers and technicians working on applied R&D topics to improve battery safety, performance and life.
  • Topics can include things like immersed coolants, fast charging, new materials/designs, lithium plating diagnostics, etc.
  • Gain exposure to the forefront of technologies that will find their way into applications within the next 5 years across automotive, heavy-duty, aerospace and defense applications.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

  • Operational and tactical project management, including tracking cost, scope and schedule and working to execute projects on budget and on time.
  • Data review and analyses, with theoretical or simulation support as needed.
  • Develop and deliver reports and/or presentation to clients and/or other project managers in a concise, yet thorough manner.
  • Technical leadership and consulting as a subject matter expert to other project teams. Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineering and technical staff.
  • Develop research proposals and engage with clients to determine their specific needs and work to develop/propose solutions.
  • Must work with a sense of urgency and have the ability to work in areas of ambiguity, allowing research findings to help guide next steps.

Requirements:

  • Requires a Masters in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering or similar.
  • 6-10 years: Experience in basic and/or applied research in the areas of thermal/electrical/energy systems and/or heat transfer related to energy storage systems, lithium-ion batteries, or electrified vehicles. Proven track record or technical/journal publications and conference proceedings.
  • 6-10 years: Proven project execution and leadership skills including the ability to both lead and participate in team environments, especially multi disciplinary.
  • 6-10 years: Data management and analytical abilities, including Excel, Python, Matlab, Simulink etc.
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.
