Job Description

Objectives of this Role:

  • Enjoy working with high-aptitude teams across the Institute to build on your existing expertise by self/team-learning new skills to solve complex systems engineering challenges that benefit the world.
  • Develop models and implement algorithms in simulation as well as real-time embedded systems to deliver engineered solutions that can benefit the world!
  • Leverage your domain expertise in power conversion or energy storage systems to help build advanced motor control/inverter algorithms as well as solutions for grid storage applications.
  • Leverage your control algorithms expertise to develop solutions that improve efficiency, performance and emissions for a wide range of sustainable energy & mobility applications.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

  • Develop advanced control algorithms for sustainable energy & mobility applications focusing on energy efficiency and emissions improvements
  • Implement and deploy control algorithms on real-time microcontrollers & DSPs from Texas Instruments, dSPACE, National Instruments, ETAS, Woodward and SwRI among others.
  • Conduct high quality experimental work in test cells as well as power system and vehicle environment with minimal oversight, but strong teamwork
  • Must be able to work in a team environment consistently collaborating with other personnel
  • Apply modeling and control solutions to real systems. A strong grasp of fundamental electrical and mechanical engineering principles is required. Battery chemistry a plus.

Requirements:

  • Requires an Bachelors or a Masters or a PhD in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace Engineering, or similar engineering degree
  • 2-5 years: Relevant professional work experience for those with a BS and MS degree
  • 0-5 years: PhD degree
  • 2-5 years: Knowledge of communication protocols such as CAN, UDP, TCP/IP, SENT etc. a plus. Demonstrated proficiency in MATLAB and Simulink; Python and LabVIEW RT, FPGA a plus. Experience in building and tuning controllers. MPC, PID, sliding mode strongly preferred.
  • 2-5 years: Experience writing software for real-time rapid prototyping controllers like dSPACE, ETAS, Mototron, NI cRIO is strongly preferred
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.

Special Requirements:

Must be a U.S. person (i.e., U.S. citizen, non-U.S. citizen national, lawful permanent resident, asylee, or refugee) due to ITAR work in section.
