Biostatistics and Data Sciences (BDS) is a global organization with more than 400 employees within the Human Pharma Business Unit. Working in close collaboration with other functions at Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) and external vendors we combine methodological and technical data science skills with business and scientific expertise to drive smart, timely and confident decision making at every stage of drug development, approval and access.

On our journey to transform BDS into a modern data science organization in clinical development our intent is to create a learning organization in which people develop and deploy leading-edge data science approaches and technologies to actively plan, generate and evaluate evidence that shapes informed decision-making along the value chain.

Our clinical data scientists support drug research and development by providing strategic planning and execution, data transformation as well as all aspects of descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive analytics of data.

This position can be filled in Ingelheim or Biberach 

Tasks & responsibilities

  • As a Senior Principal Clinical Data Scientist, you will take on the role of a BDS product owner, representing BDS in all data science-related aspects up to substance level. Your responsibilities will include strategic planning and execution to ensure effective task management while fostering the growth and development of data science initiatives within the organization.
  • You will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) or Process Lead for designing as well as transforming, analyzing, and reporting complex phase I-IV clinical trials that represent new challenges and for which project and therapeutic area knowledge is not given, such as mega trials or new indications and for complex international R&D projects.
  • You will take the lead in mentoring and guiding colleagues inside and outside BDS on the application of traditional statistical techniques, as well as integrating innovative data science methodologies for the design, collection, and analysis of clinical data from trials and projects.
  • In your new role you will contribute to evidence generation along the human pharma value chain by telling a compelling data story regarding complex data science aspects to generate insights and trigger actions that make a difference to our patients. 
  • You will collaborate closely with scientists and experts from various disciplines in clinical development.
  • You will enhance your business knowledge and scientific expertise by identifying trends in the statistical and data science community within and outside BI. 
  • As a key member of our global biostatistics and data sciences organization you serve as a catalyst in transforming BDS into an agile and cutting-edge data science organization. This entails promoting empowerment, communicating the overarching vision, and cultivating self-organized teams.

Requirements

  • Master of Science (MSc) or Doctoral Degree (PhD) in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related field (Data Science, Natural Science, Psychology, Finance, etc) with longstanding knowledge and advanced experience in understanding the whole clinical drug life cycle process, including aspects such as clinical trial design, clinical experiments, medical terminology, and processing clinical trial information
  • Excellent knowledge of statistical methodology including advanced understanding of cutting-edge statistical concepts to data science
  • Advanced project lead experience and exposure to agile project management, with a background in working as a product owner and project statistician, collaborating in a cross-departmental team of highly experienced professionals who together form the entire clinical development path
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration within and outside of our organization. This includes cultivating a We mindset, demonstrating empathy, building trust, embracing curiosity, and showing courage, all while maintaining a big picture mindset
  • Oral and written communication skills to interact in interdisciplinary teams as well as the ability to explain, visualize and communicate statistical information to non-statisticians effectively
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
