Job Description

  • As Principal Data Scientist, you are responsible for the development and implementation of the systems biology/medicine as well as network science and bioinformatics strategy and help to identify opportunities where respective approaches can further advance disease understanding including characterization of patient populations.
  • In your new role, you analyze, visualize and interpret complex large-scale data sets by applying systems biology/medicine as well as network analysis approaches to advance our clinical development programs. For example, you establish computational approaches that place multi-omics data - ranging from bulk as well as single cell to spatial data - into the context of large-scale molecular and individual patient level networks to gain an understanding of functional relationships and disease mechanisms.
  • As a Data Science Lead (DSL) you will work in close alignment with other development team members and data science subject matter experts and are responsible for:
    • advising clinical development teams on opportunities and limitations of Data Science approaches (e.g. from bioinformatics, systems pharmacology, pharmacometrics or descriptive analytics).
    • developing and aligning the TMCP data and data analysis strategy as part of the clinical development programs and ensuring their respective implementation and execution.
    • clinical development projects up to submission representing our data science functions at regulatory meetings.
  • Based on your analyses you support internal decision making, further advance disease and biomarker understanding as well as contribute to successful approvals.
  • You ensure the timely delivery of respective data analysis documents (e.g., dataset specification, analysis plans, and reports) and documents where you are co-author (e.g., clinical development plans).
  • With your expertise in the field of systems biology/medicine and network science, you will provide consultancy and expert advice to other scientists and stakeholders within our group, department and beyond.
  • You will coordinate and/or contribute to internal and external initiatives / working groups (e.g., public partnership programs or academic research collaborations), you will organize and contribute to cooperation with external organizations and establish/maintain contacts in the field of systems biology/medicine and network science.

Requirements

We expect a strong team player, who is able to successfully act in a global and remote context. Good interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively interact internally as well as externally and the ability to pro-actively identify issues and share solutions are a pre-requisite.

  • Ph.D. or master’s degree in systems biology/medicine, bioinformatics, data sciences, life sciences molecular biology, or related field with experience in the analysis and interpretation of complex data sets.
  • Some years of experience in the field of data science in the pharmaceutical industry, CROs, or regulatory agencies is required.
  • Some years of working experience in clinical development teams including solid knowledge in applying network-based data science approaches to clinical drug development is a prerequisite.
  • Broad expertise in the advanced and integrative analysis of omics data sets and their interpretation, e.g. using R or python on a high performance cluster or cloud environment.
  • Experience in the field of machine learning is considered an advantage.

TMCP Data Science

Within TMCP Data Science we are focusing on improving disease, biomarker and drug understanding through modern data science approaches, including bioinformatics, systems pharmacology, pharmacometrics, data enablement and data engineering.

To implement our vision of turning data into knowledge, we utilize our scientific expertise in key data science approaches and act as Data Science Leads in development project teams. In this role you will be a main contact for data science related questions supported by the whole TMCP Data Science group. You will join the clinical development team approximately two years before first-in-man clinical trials and support projects until successful regulatory approval and beyond.

We inspire and empower our data scientists at TMCP to shape the future of Data Sciences at BI and value a culture of sharing knowledge, pro-active contributions, and feedback combined with a positive “how to” attitude also in challenging situations. Within TMCP Data Sciences you will have the opportunity to actively contribute or lead internal and external working groups/initiatives focusing on e.g. disease strategies, innovative methods, standardization and processes. Thus, you will have a major impact on our future clinical drug development programs, thereby actively contributing to the availability of breakthrough therapies that will increase human health.
