Job Description

WHO YOU'LL WORK WITH

You will be based in one of our European offices as part of our R&D Engineering Service Line within the Product Development and Procurement Practice. This new service line brings together the best of McKinsey’s technical capabilities to help our clients leverage digital technology to turbocharge the pace of their engineering R&D. 

Your work will focus on the most challenging R&D questions, such as helping to reduce the sound propagation of helicopters, accelerating the development of new drugs, and boosting the performance of a sailing team to win America’s Cup.

As part of this group, you will join a team combining passionate experts from engineering (aeronautical, mechanical, and similar disciplines), software development, and advanced analytics to develop and push the boundaries of AI-based computer-aided engineering. You will typically work on projects across industries and functions and will be fully integrated with the rest of our global firm. You will also collaborate with colleagues from across McKinsey & Company to help our clients deliver breakthrough products, experiences, and businesses.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

You will be among the leaders of a new service line to deliver at-scale AI-driven engineering transformation. 

You will bring to life the latest research and innovations to develop a new offering and shape clients’ engineering roadmaps. You will make sure that we deliver best-in-class solutions while tailoring them to clients’ specific needs.

In this role, you will have the chance to be an entrepreneur, opening new opportunities for client impact and reinventing McKinsey’s approaches. You will be responsible for developing new client relationships, democratizing our offering for transformational change and capability building. You will lead engineers, consultants, and a coalition of external partners in an agile way to quickly provide our clients with the solutions they need. You will help combine the latest deep learning technologies with traditional physics simulation solutions.

You will be a core member of the team with responsibilities that range from shaping the next-generation approach to engineering for various internal teams to ensuring that we stay on the leading edge of R&D. You will facilitate our ecosystem of partners and thanks to your tech leadership capabilities, you will validate key architectural choices and design solutions. You are a flexible and adaptive tech director who effectively communicates across a broad range of stakeholder groups from engineers and partners to business users and effectively leads a project workstream.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s degree (mechanical engineering or computer-science-related is preferred); advanced graduate degree (e.g., PhD) is beneficial
• 20+ years of experience in leading an engineering team as part of an innovative group leveraging physics simulations or fluid dynamics (CFD/CAE) and deep learning, preferably in manufacturing industries or life sciences
• Strong knowledge of physics, statistics, algorithms, data structures, data modeling, and software architecture
• Hands-on experience developing and implementing mathematical models to solve complex engineering problems with computer programs such as Ansys, Autodesk, and SIMULIA 
• Strong application development knowledge of Python
• Familiarity with machine learning frameworks like scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch
• Proven record of leadership in a work setting
• Demonstrated track record of understanding business requirements and designing realistic and effective solutions
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and effectively interact with people at all levels in an organization
• Skills to communicate complex ideas effectively
• Willing to travel 
• Fluent in English and local language; additional language fluency is a plus
