Job Description

By bringing a data centric approach to the way Swiss Re's IT operates, the System Data Analytics squad goal is to fundamentally improve our understanding, and performance of the IT landscape through the use of machine learning, data analytics and AIOps. We look into the large quantity of information generated by Swiss Re's 1'600+ IT systems, enabling teams with insights that help them become preemptive in their system operations and optimisation.

Some examples of our latest achievements:

  • We implemented the automated analysis of Swiss Re's substantial footprint on Microsoft Azure, correlated with the actual resource usage over time, and identification of resource optimization possibilities – With a reduction in cashout spend of up to 80% in some cases!
  • We went live with a near real time analysis of metrics and logs generated by Swiss Re's core systems, using sophisticated methodologies such as natural language processing, so that production support teams are alerted of issues which are starting to build up across systems, combined with hints around the technical cause of the issue. In May 2023, the combined time saved for the support teams amounted already to close to 600 hours of engineering work!

What You will bring to the Team / Description of Your Role

We are a small, yet very well connected and impactful team. Our passion to learn is what connects us. Joining us, you will learn the technologies that are used in modern data science products with a focus on cloud technology, distributed systems, while gaining experience in the application of machine learning to solve complex problems on real data. As a Senior Data Scientist, you will be:

  • Leading and inspiring the team on the most relevant data science and machine learning abilities, and how they would apply to the challenges the team is tackling with our customers.
  • Expanding existing use cases and building further use cases based on our solid foundations and strong collaboration with other IT units in Swiss Re.
  • Collaborating with other products, investigating what data is available, how it can be best leveraged, and taking initiative into figuring out most appropriate methodology to analyse the information.

About You

Nobody is perfect and meets 100% of requirements. If you, however, meet some of the criteria below and are genuinely curious about the world of data science, we will be happy to meet you.

In order to be successful in the role, you need to have these technical skills and knowledge:

  • Master's or Ph.D. in a quantitative field: e.g., computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, physics, operational research, engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience (in the industry or academic) in analytics (machine learning, statistics, data and text mining). Though having exposure to a systems context (metrics, logs, events, dependency management) would also be helpful, it is not a requirement.
  • Proficiency in Python, including the relevant statistical and machine learning packages. Knowledge of NLP, and deep learning or distributed computation frameworks is a plus (Tensorflow, Pytorch, Spark).
  • Experience with writing neat and well documented code, using versioning tools (Git).
  • An engaging communication style, particularly for explaining complex analysis results in a clear, precise and meaningful manner.
  • If you don't have some or any of those but are eager to learn them, get in contact with us.
