About the team
The Products Underwriting business function is the driving force behind product development and underwriting excellence at Swiss Re. It encompasses the Property & Specialty, Casualty and Life & Health divisions. It also deploys Swiss Re's knowledge and expertise to promote underwriting excellence and to provide standard criteria for risk pricing in life and non-life business. The Data Science Intern will work within Treaty Casualty Products under the guidance and direction of the units' most Senior Actuaries. This project team's mandate is to continuously improve the quality and depth of our actuarial analysis through the establishment of a robust data library that will aid in parameter development. The Data Science Intern will support the team by making data more accessible for analysis. This includes but is not limited to understanding the problem, identifying relevant data sources, obtaining data of various shapes and forms, automating data processing, and extracting insights. The candidate will also work on one of a number of research projects using the data already collected by the company and potentially integrating forward-looking predictive analysis where no prior data is available. For example, identifying, interpreting and quantifying economic, societal, legal, regulatory or other factors that will influence Casualty business. You will gain a good understanding of how actuarial and other data are used to price our products (treaties covering portfolios of original insured policies) as well as learn about a specific insurance product/coverage. You may also have the opportunity to test and develop pricing models and tools. In addition to working with the unit's Senior actuaries, you may engage with others in the team including senior underwriters, claims professionals and portfolio managers to accomplish your objectives. Overall this is an excellent opportunity for a candidate aspiring to a career in the (re)insurance analytical, actuarial, or potentially underwriting disciplines.
