Job Description

We are seeking an applied scientist to lead Uber's regulatory data initiatives. As part of the Policy, Research & Economics Team, you would participate in every step of the engagement process with regulators: from joining initial discussions with internal and external stakeholders, to helping negotiate aggregation and anonymization parameters, to building queries and reviewing regulatory submissions.

It's vital that communications with regulators are as accurate as possible, so you should have strong attention to detail and a passion for getting things right -- both quantitatively and qualitatively. You will need to have experience cleaning and analyzing large data sets using SQL/R/Python. Additionally, this role requires an ability to work across functions in a large organization, balance competing priorities from multiple stakeholders, and broadly understand the context of regulatory data sharing across different jurisdictions and different parts of the company.

What you'll do:

  • Prototype queries and code for regulatory data production, with deep attention to detail and a robust knowledge of Uber's underlying data systems
  • Work directly with local policy, operations, legal, and safety teams to negotiate regulatory data specifications that meet requirements while safeguarding user privacy
  • Understand the global landscape of regulatory data requirements for ridesharing and delivery, helping the company take a consistent and principled approach across geographies
  • Support the development and publication of our annual Government Transparency Report
  • Review regulatory submissions for robustness and accuracy
  • Work cross-functionally with compliance and operations teams to develop automated pipelines for data production
  • Develop internal standards and best practices for data aggregation and privacy protection
  • Explore and incorporate novel approaches to protecting personal information in public-facing data sets
  • Some travel may be required

Basic qualifications:

  • Experience in data science, with a demonstrable ability to learn and/or use tools such as SQL, Python, and R to work efficiently at scale
  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and communicate complex topics to audiences with different backgrounds
  • A track record of working independently with minimal oversight

Preferred qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in economics, statistics, math, physics, computer science, or another quantitative field, or 2+ years' experience in data science; candidates with a relevant advanced degree and/or extensive experience will be evaluated (and compensated) commensurate with their education and experience
  • Experience working with large and complex data sets in a regulatory or legal environment is a plus
  • Strong project management and cross-functional collaboration skills, with demonstrated experience balancing multiple stakeholders and objectives in a large organization
  • The ability to balance attention to detail with swift execution, including the ability to deliver on tight timelines

At Uber, we reimagine the way the world moves for the better. The idea was born on a snowy night in Paris in 2008, and ever since then, our DNA of reimagination and reinvention carries on. We've grown into a global platform moving people and things in ever-expanding ways, taking on big problems to help drivers, riders, delivery partners, and eaters make movement happen at the push of a button for everyone, everywhere.

We welcome people from all backgrounds who seek the opportunity to help build a future where everyone and everything can move independently. If you have the curiosity, passion, and collaborative spirit, work with us, and let's move the world forward, together.
