Job Purpose

You'll be part of the Chief Data Office function. It is a critical role to deliver on National grid vision which is To be at the heart of a clean, fair and affordable energy future. You'll be working as part of a multi-disciplinary team of data and analytics leaders, and fellow data experts to develop and manage data products that can empower our business to make decisions from data to drive growth activities and bring efficiencies to our data processes and data maturity.

You'll play a pivotal role in operationalizing the most-urgent data and analytics initiatives for Nationalgrid digital business initiatives. This role presents an opportunity for someone with a passion for data modelling to work within our data interoperability team. It has several facets:

  • Business & data analysis to gain the necessary level of understanding for the data definition and usage
  • Production of the data model working with Data engineers
  • Forward engineering of the physical implementation of critical data use cases

What you'll do

  • Design, implement, and document data architecture and data modeling solutions, which include the use of relational, NoSQL, and dimensional databases. These solutions support enterprise information management, business intelligence, machine learning, data science, and other business interests.
  • Oversee the design of multiple data models and have a broad understanding of how each model fulfils the needs of the business.
  • Help the business in identifying how data supports business processes and how to model those needs.
  • Liaise with stakeholders in building trust in the data being used for decision making.
  • Work with the Domain teams as needed to create conceptual, logical, physical data models, support physical model implementation and DDL.
  • Synchronize data models and implemented databases to identify implementation completeness and identify any gaps.
  • Work with Platform engineering teams to drive automation by guiding them through data modeling activities.
  • Support innovative and modern data tools, techniques, and architectures to automate data preparation and integration in order to minimize manual and error-prone processes and improve productivity.
  • Provide oversight and advice to other data modelers who are undertaking the design of data models and support the[SM1] management of data dictionaries and ontologies.
  • Propose optimization and standardization recommendations to achieve enterprise-wide consensus about the meaning of data.
  • Recommend data modeling and design standards to Principal Data Modeler and Chief Data Architect.
  • Consult about current / future industry trends and technology needs.

Oversee and lead the evaluation of data models and databases for variances and discrepancies to ensure data is represented correctly.

What you'll need

  • A bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, data management, information systems, information science or a related quantitative field is required.
  • At least 10 years or more of work experience in data modeling disciplines including data integration, model optimization, and/or other areas directly relevant to data modeling responsibilities and tasks, and ideally 5 years of this experience working in cross-functional teams and collaborating with business stakeholders in utilities in support of a departmental and/or multi-departmental data management and analytics initiative.
  • Strong experience building, managing and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic business environment.
  • Deep experience managing and leading teams with varied skillsets including information architects, data architects, data modelers, and data engineers.
  • Creativity and collaboration skills
  • Accessibility and ability to interface with, and gain the respect of, stakeholders at all levels and roles within the company.
  • Good judgment, a sense of urgency and has demonstrated commitment to high standards of ethics, regulatory compliance, customer service and business integrity.

Technical Skills

Knowledge of

  • Extensive knowledge and experience with conceptual, logical, and physical data models. Deep knowledge of 3NF and creating data models using relational design. Knowledge of NoSQL database design and dimensional design.
  • Experience and knowledge of NoSQL databases, Snowflake is a plus.
  • Knowledge of working with the integration of large Heterogeneous datasets:

ETL/ELT

Data replication/CDC

Message-oriented data movement

API design and access

Data virtualization

Streaming data

  • Knowledge of data life cycle and data development process.

Strong experience with

  • Creation of complex conceptual, logical and physical data models using 3NF, NoSQL, and dimensional design.
  • Hands on experience with Data modelling tools such as – ER / Studio, Erwin, PowerDesigner etc is a MUST
  • Reviewing modifications of existing data models and systems for cross-compatibility.
  • Implementing data strategies and data models.
  • Updating and optimizing data and metadata models.
  • Evaluating implemented data systems for variances, discrepancies, and efficiency.
  • Troubleshooting and optimizing data systems.
  • Experience in Database capabilities such as:

[SQL, PL/SQL, others] for relational databases

NoSQL oriented databases like MongoDB, Cassandra, others] for nonrelational NoSQL databases.

Analytics, and BI software tools like [Tableau, Qlik, PowerBI and others] for semantic-layer-based data discovery.

  • Working with data science teams, helping them to refining and optimizing data science and machine learning models & algorithms, and determine metadata querying requirements.
  • Working with the business and analytics teams to gather requirements for the data model and database design. Working with data requirements documents to design and implement the data model.

  • Familiarity with industry standard models, preferably for the utility industry, knowledge graph networks, or ontologies.

Salary

$133,000 - $156,000 a year

Please be advised that due to the nature of this position, incumbents are subject to federal Drug & Alcohol safety regulations governing US Department of Transportation (DOT) covered positions, including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA). As such, the Company’s testing programs and policies regarding the use of federally prohibited drugs or alcohol, for recreational or medical purposes, will remain in effect for these safety-sensitive, DOT covered positions.
