Job Purpose

National Grid is committed to enabling a clean, fair, and affordable energy transition. Distributed energy resource (DER) applications that add renewable energy, energy storage, and other clean technologies onto the utility grid are at the heart of that transition.

As part of the Customer Energy Integration department, this position will join the DER Customer Experience team focused on user experience (UX), data integrity (DI), and performance excellence (PEX) with a vision to provide a best-in-class DER customer experience across all customer and trade partner segments. This position will implement improvements and make recommendations that optimize data inputs, updates, maintenance, security, and visualizations to provide valuable end-to-end process insights to leaders and accurate technical representations of proposed and connected DER customer equipment.

Key Accountabilities

  • Create, customize, and implement data integrity tools that incorporate visual management, error proofing, and data validation techniques to prevent and proactively identify process and automation breakdowns
  • Analyze trends in the DER application, performance, operational, and billing data and communicate the results to leaders, teams, and customers in concise, visually stunning formats that enable them to make informed decisions
  • Troubleshoot records, data fields, and associated meta-data to identify interface, automation, and user errors when users raise concerns about potential IT issues
  • Review and analyze existing legacy data and lead efforts (using automation where feasible) to refine and clean up anomalies and missing data
  • Develop a detailed understanding of key business processes, customer needs, and utility regulations affecting the DER customer experience in order to help identify where potential enhancement requests may break fundamental aspects of the user experience and/or conflict with utility best practices or regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with leaders, subject matter experts, customers, and other team members to identify potential enhancements to improve performance, user experience, and data accuracy
  • Perform routine administrative tasks to ensure appropriate levels of user access and permissions, data integrity, and a positive user experience overall.
  • Assist other team members as needed with ad hoc process improvement, automation, and IT enhancement projects
  • Other tasks and special projects as assigned.

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of visual management techniques and digital data visualization best practices is required, with a strong preference for candidates familiar with Power BI
  • Experience and familiarity with macros, visual basic, SQL, or other advanced database and excel functionality is required
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze large data sets is required, with a preference for candidates that are familiar with Python
  • Ability to write clear, detailed, and precise process instructions that include technical jargon
  • Ability to remain calm when communicating with users during high stress situations when things are not working as expected and set clear expectations about the path toward a resolution
  • Strong preference for candidates with experience in computer programming and/or analysis (i.e. the ability to analyze code and understand the expected data outputs and anomalies in the data relative to the code)
  • Preference for candidates with ability to quickly learn, understand, and effectively communicate complicated processes, programs, or policies to a variety of audiences, including a strong preference for candidates that can identify when stakeholders are misunderstanding each other in a conversation and help to “translate” between stakeholders from different disciplines or levels of experience

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree with at least 1 year of professional work experience OR Bachelor’s degree with at least 2-4 years of professional work experience OR at least 6 years of relevant professional work experience
  • At least 1 year of previous computer science, data science, or data-based visual management experience, with a strong preference for roles in an agile IT work environment (other experience in the relevant business units that this position is supporting will be considered if a candidate is otherwise qualified)
  • Work or academic experience in any of the following fields is also desirable: computer science, computer programming, data science, infographic design, data visualization, machine learning, artificial intelligence, user experience (UX) design, website design, data management, agile project management
