Battelle's Health Research and Analytics (HRA) business line is currently seeking a Modeling and Simulation Specialist II to support our government customer in Portsmouth, VA (partial remote available). This Public Health (PH) and Health Analysis (HA) program enables our government customer to maximize readiness through force health protection (FHP) strategies and solutions for current and potential Public Health (PH) threats. Health Analysis provides epidemiologic expertise and leadership to improve the value of Navy Healthcare through evidence-based methods and clinical health analysis. The core scientific and technical capabilities and product lines in this program are to conduct Health Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Analysis; Disease and Injury Prevention; and PH Consultation and Support for the benefit of active-duty service members, retirees, and their families. Battelle shall enable these capabilities and product lines by providing Scientific and Technical Information (STI) deliverables, by performing Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E), and other Research and Development (R&D) related analytical services. 

Job Summary

Provides expert services in modeling and simulation functions to support epidemiologic evaluations of the effectiveness of clinical services, medical management activities, disease prevention programs and health promotion activities.

Responsibilities

  • Builds, calibrates, and uses models, and interprets and explains model outputs.
  • Coordinates and facilitates teams of professional and support personnel conducting routine and non‐routine epidemiologic evaluations. 
  • Designs studies and metrics for the evaluation of the effectiveness of clinical services, medical management activities, disease prevention programs and health promotion activities to support data‐driven decisions.
  • Performs inquiries, assessments, analyses, studies, reviews, and investigations through data analysis, modeling, predictive analytics, and interpretation.

Key Qualifications

  • Master of Science degree in epidemiology with at least 15 credit hours in basic and advanced biostatistics courses; alternatives include master’s degree in public health with at least 30 credit hours in courses in epidemiology and biostatistics or data scientist with at least 30 credit hours in courses in epidemiology and biostatistics. 
  • At least 5-12 years of epidemiology and modeling or related experience in the field. 
  • 3 or more years of work experience in the field of epidemiology. Post‐master’s degree research may be substituted for experience on a one‐for‐one basis. 
  • Computerized database management and statistical software program skills, including R or Python.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated skills in written and oral communication. 
  • Experience utilizing Military Medicine Data: AHLTA, M2, MDR and MIP, CarePoint MHS Population Health Portal, or MHS Genesis.
  • Experience in machine learning or artificial intelligence.
  • Experience with PubMed, Medline, or RefWorks.
  • Experience with Stella Architect.
  • Experience in Excel formula writing.
  • Experience in Python.
  • Experience with Visual Basic.
  • Familiarity with system dynamics, systems thinking, and systems modeling.
  • Familiarity with disease transmission models.
  • Experience in infectious disease epidemiology. 
  • Analytical experience in effectiveness of clinical services, medical management activities, disease prevention programs and health promotion activities to support data‐driven decisions. 
  • Experience in military medicine.
