Job Description

This is an applied behavioral science role within the product team at Walgreens Health and collaborates cross-functionally with the clinical, data science, engineering, HEOR as well as user experience, marketing, engineering, and the broader product teams. The implementation and evaluation research role provides subject matter expertise on observational and experimental research design, including adaptive methods. This role also provides behavioral science leadership in using data science methods such as machine learning, data mining, and other modern analytic methods to capitalize on intensive longitudinal data to identify factors that would inform intervention optimization, and to ensure that models are actionable for improving engagement and health behaviors. Critical to this role is oversight of the design of research that provides proof points for intervention efficacy and effectiveness; and guiding the development and testing of models that provide actionable and impactful personalized recommendations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Leads, develops and coaches a team of junior behavioral scientists on how to use more advanced data science methods and evaluation to solve business problems and develop evidence-based interventions to scale.
  • Builds team’s skills by identifying training needs and active coaching.
  • Guides the development and application of innovative models to ensure actionable outputs and recommendations supporting a products and services that achieve engagement, drive health behavior change and outcomes.
  • Researches, identifies and implements new frameworks to better measure engagement and behavior.
  • Oversees study design, sampling strategy, identification of validated tools to measure engagement and behavioral outcomes, data collection and analysis strategy, ensuring that studies are completed with excellence, with high quality deliverables and actionable insights.
  • Leads strategic research to guide the direction of the company, ensuring alignment with stakeholder and business needs.
  • Identifies strategic initiatives where research is needed and ensures it is incorporated in time to impact decisions.
  • Shares insights and embeds understanding of the consumer/provider/stakeholder engagement and health behavior, determinants of behavior and effective behavioral economic and behavior change techniques.
  • Collaborates with data science team to leverage health behavior change and behavioral economics theory, techniques to develop innovative models that improve engagement with products and services, health behaviors and outcomes.
  • Identifies, develops and strengthens existing vendor partnerships and continually explores new partnerships (including academic partnerships) and methods to stay on cutting edge of research.
  • Identifies and partners with best-in-class research suppliers to design leading edge research and ensures flawless execution and delivery of results.
  • Works with Senior Director, Behavioral Science and Engagement to prioritize and manage research budget
  • Provides IP inputs, publication manuscripts and presentations for internal and external opportunities as they arise.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and at least 4 years OR High School/GED and at least 7 years Experience in epidemiology, data science, public health, social/behavioral sciences, psychology, behavioral economics, social sciences, or other related field
  • At least 8 years of academic and/or applied and/or professional behavioral science and/or design research
  • Experience leading intervention or implementation science or behavioral data science or evaluation or other related types of research
  • Experience leading quantitative research: designing experimental or observational study protocols, methodology definition, sampling strategy, data collection and statistical data analysis plan to ensure assessment on impact of program, product, or service outcomes
  • Experience collaborating with data scientists to develop models with actionable and personalized recommendations that drive engagement, individual behavior change and clinical outcomes
  • Strong skills in A/B testing and/or implementation science research design, methods, and implementation and/or program evaluation research and/or data analytics/predictive modeling/AI/ML
  • At least 2 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
  • At least 2 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or crossfunctional team leadership.
  • Willing to travel up to/at least 20% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or Doctorate (e.g. DrPH, ScD) OR MA/MS/MHS/MPHPhD in epidemiology, data science, public health, psychology, behavioral economics, social sciences, or other related field
  • Experience working in research, public health, commercial, biotech/pharma, big tech or medtech, start-up, healthcare, health insurance or other health setting
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to influence and collaborate with all levels of the business, both by formal and informal communication.
  • At least 2 years of experience managing implementation, evaluation or data science research and budgets
  • Experience working with and analyzing various types of data using SAS, R, MATLAB, Python, Stata, or similar software
  • Experience with patents, writing manuscripts and publishing

Experience with one or more of the following:

  • Digital behavior change intervention design
  • Health behavior change theories, mechanisms, and techniques
  • Behavioral economics or gamification principles
  • Health communication theory and techniques for developing content that engages and achieves health outcomes
  • Health coaching or counseling
  • Patient- provider communication/shared decision-making
  • Chronic condition self-management
  • Theory, principles, and mechanisms of community engagement including interventions that address health inequities and social determinants of health
