Job Description

The Director, Clinical Data Sciences, RWE Clinical Trials will be responsible for generating Real-World Evidence (RWE) through advanced analytics and innovative approaches in the clinical trials space and will be an integral part of the RWE Scientific Affairs team. This role reports to the VP of Real-World Evidence. The successful candidate should have a strong desire to influence internal and external decision making through the application of innovative data science and technology to help address critical business questions.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supports the due diligence on new real world data providers/vendors and drive RWD quality assessments to inform investment decisions
  • Directs and utilizes statistical modeling and other data science techniques for descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analyses. Evangelizes new ideas / technologies / solutions to gain acceptance from a wide range of audiences
  • Works to mine raw data sets to deliver standardized, analysis-ready patient cohorts from in house data assets or online licensed platforms, including generating hypotheses and analyzing data to test and interpret results standardized in close collaboration with the value and outcomes research and patient/market access team and help shape the analytics strategy
  • Provides deep technical expertise to advise on algorithmic and model development, help define data and analytics strategies, and ensure validation and deployment strategies in place to turn models and solutions into actionable insights
  • Leads and builds data science projects by developing and applying creative solutions that go beyond current tools to deliver data-driven insights to high-priority scientific problems
  • Demonstrates leadership in technical guidance to working team
  • Works side by side with the other Clinical Trial leaders on defining priorities and collaboratively and pragmatically building a roadmap to ensure that Data Science methodologies and analytics are being leveraged to deliver on high value use cases
  • Effectively navigate technology, analytical, regulatory, legal and privacy complexities to achieve objectives
  • Partners with other members of the Walgreens Clinical Trial team members to deliver actionable insights from real-world, clinical and other data sources to support biopharmaceutical RWE and clinical trial requests. Potential efforts include analysis of unmet needs (safe and effective therapy in certain disease states), treatment patterns and healthcare/economic burden data to support budget impact modelling and cost effectiveness modeling
  • Performs data mining and statistical analysis to analyze RWE/RWD in order to find new insights regarding patient populations and treatment outcomes
  • Supports the development of real-world data, analytics and platform capabilities, applying cutting edge advanced analytics methodologies and tools to address scientific questions from biopharmaceutical companies
  • Collaborates on design and execution of outcomes research studies from a data science and analytics perspective
  • Ensures high quality, rigorous and readily interpretable deliverables from RWE studies/analyses
  • Sets the strategy for manipulation and analyses of large and complex data sets and builds dashboards, analytics and reports for internal and external consumption
  • Interprets and applies data in the most complex analyses, and explains findings to business audiences to improve products and processes
  • Directs the design and development of new and/or complex algorithms and statistical predictive models and determines analytical approaches and modeling techniques to evaluate scenarios and potential future outcomes
  • Directs and implements activities that impact the critical directions of the organization. Typically assigned to the most critical and strategic / complex / high risk undertakings
  • Builds and oversees team of Data Scientists and biostatisticians, Facilitates communication between staff, management, vendors, and other technology resources within and outside of the organization.
  • Shares highly complex information related to areas of expertise. Interacts with senior management to keep abreast of objectives. Interacts with direct reports and peers in management / customers / vendors to interpret information and improve cross-functional processes and programs. Builds and enhances key internal and external contacts.

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science, Machine Learning, Econometrics, Physics, Biostatistics or related quantitative discipline and at least 8 years of experience in a quantitative or computational function.
  • Experience leading an advanced analytics OR solutions team.
  • Experience designing and executing robust and reproducible statistical analyses in the context of epidemiology and observational research with healthcare data
  • Experience using advanced statistical testing techniques including hypothesis testing, ANOVA/ANCOVA/MANOVA, generalized regression models, and common machine learning techniques
  • Experience processing complex and large data from various data sources
  • Experience handling of protected patient health information
  • Knowledge of at least two of the following: Tableau, Power Bi, Alteryx, Spotfire, Metabase or other BI intelligence tools
  • At least 5 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
  • At least 5 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross-functional team leadership.
  • Willing to travel up to 10% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced analytics experience in R, Python, SQL
