Job Description

The Senior R&D Engineer (m/f/d) is responsible for the development of software products and supporting systems. In this role, the Senior R&D Engineer will use advanced technical and problem-solving skills to help the team tackle complex issues, satisfy customer requirements, and accomplish development objectives.

The Senior R&D Engineer will join the Ansys optiSLang Research and Development team that creates state of the art software for machine learning based sensitivity analysis, optimization and uncertainty quantification analysis. Ansys optiSLang is the world leading software package for process integration and parametric design optimization. With help of machine learning methods, the design optimization tools are extended by an automatic meta-modeling framework for efficient sensitivity analysis and multi-disciplinary optimization.

The Senior R&D Engineer will contribute to the development of new methods and algorithms as well as the maintenance and improvement of existing implementations. The spectrum of the work covers the development of consistent mathematical formulations, efficient and robust implementation in the algorithmic library using C++ and python, and finally the publication and the patenting of novel ideas. Specific focus will be the combination of machine learning algorithms (like TensorFlow, pyTorch) for geometric networks, differential equations in space or time, for spatial 3D data. Another focus will be on advanced statistical algorithms for uncertainty quantification, which includes reliability methods to estimate small to medium failure probabilities, validation, robust design or tolerance analysis.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates in planning, architecture, and research
  • Performs complex development activities that may require extensive analysis in areas including user experience, software design, solver or data science research, implementation, maintenance of existing algorithms, testing, evaluation, benchmarking, documentation of benchmarks and algorithms
  • Works together with the customer support team to ensure the applicability of the developed algorithm for industrial applications
  • Employs best practices and helps to maintain them through technical reviews and mentoring
  • Performs complex bug verification, release testing and beta support for assigned products. Research problems discovered by QA or product support and develops solutions
  • Researches and understands the marketing requirements for a product, including target environment, performance criteria and competitive issues. May work with strategic customers or proxies to assess needs and develop solutions
  • Works independently with minimal supervision and may take on some planning and mentoring responsibilities
