The Novelis Digital Center of Excellence Data Science team is seeking a Sr. Lead Data Scientist (Advanced Predictive Maintenance) based in Atlanta. The person in this role will report to the Director, Data Science & Insights. This role will focus on Advanced Predictive Maintenance projects for different plants within Novelis. Additionally, this role will support in developing and setting standards, governance, and processes for the APM Analytical workflows. 

APM is a branch of analytics that focuses on applying rules and algorithms to the Predictive Maintenance discipline leveraging IIoT and other data sources. In this field, the candidate will perform data collection and analysis of the various predictive technologies, including but not limited to, Ultrasound Analysis, Vibration Analysis, Motor Circuit Analysis, Oil Analysis, and Infrared Thermography. The goal of the analytics is to avoid asset failure and high reactive maintenance costs by predicting the breakdown of the assets ahead of time. The output from the analytics is monitoring and alerting systems that provide information on the asset life, degradation in the operating condition of the asset, and predicting the failure of the equipment on the asset. The role requires 20-25% travel within the US and sometimes internationally.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Responsibilities: 

  • Support implementations of various Predictive Maintenance solutions at Novelis, scale and replicate these solutions to other plants 
  • Work with plant engineers located globally to solve business challenges related to forecasting the breakdown of the machines using sensor data analysis techniques such as Vibration Analysis, Motor Circuit Analysis, Oil Analysis, and Infrared Thermography 
  • Develop internal APM product utilizing the latest anomaly detection machine-learning algorithms for predicting machine failures 
  • Document and communicate results of the model to non-technical resources through various means including designing and building intuitive UI and PowerPoint presentations 
  • Regularly test and maintain analytical models to improve efficiency and keep up with changing business needs, ensuring timely analysis and testing for regular maintenance of solutions over time 
  • Adhere and improve standards and best practices for performing APM projects 
  • Support the building of accelerators for various APM solutions 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degree in electrical, mechanical, industrial, robotics, or related discipline. 
  • Master’s degree in computer science or related field 
  • 3-4 years of experience in applying Predictive Maintenance in an industrial setting 
  • Experience in designing, developing, testing, and implementing anomaly detection models for time-series data utilizing the latest unsupervised models such as GANs and VAEs 
  • Strong knowledge of the industrial data sources such as PLC, SCADA, Historian, MES and ERP systems 
  • Deep understanding of Vibration analytics and ability to build rules and algorithms around it 
  • Possess a strong ability to combine large volumes of disparate data sources and mine them for meaningful insight and to present the analysis findings to business stakeholders 
  • Strong hands-on experience in various data mining tools such as Microsoft Azure, Databricks, Python, Power BI, Excel, and SQL 
  • Proven ability to work independently, drive results in a fast-paced environment and work across regions
  • Effective communication skills, capable of presenting complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences 
  • The role requires 20-25% travel within the US and sometimes internationally.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Predictive Maintenance technologies in manufacturing, specifically metals manufacturing 
  • Experience deploying global initiatives in a matrix organization 
  • Experience in building frontend solutions using ReactJS or NextJS 
  • Understanding of operational technology (OT) architectures and Industry 4.0 
  • Master’s degree in Analytics, or another advanced degree
