Due to cutbacks in healthcare, healthcare workers are becoming increasingly busy. Software applications can be created to relieve the work of these healthcare workers. However, many patients or, for example, the elderly are not able to use a computer/tablet/telephone. This has raised the question of whether it is possible to provide an interface for this target group with a virtual assistant, using natural language processing.

By using speech there is a low threshold for people to use it, because this is something they have been doing all their lives. An example of this is supporting people with Alzheimer's by letting them ask questions to a virtual assistant and receive feedback via audio. It is often not possible for people with Alzheimer's to learn how to use a tablet with an application on it.

Many tools have limited support for the Dutch language and/or have a limited link with their own software. Info Support wants to gain knowledge regarding interpreting speech/text and performing actions in software. You will mainly investigate the link between recognizing speech and subsequently calling the correct actions.

It is important to recognize what the user means instead of what the user says. It is your job to see whether it is possible to create a virtual assistant yourself, which can also understand Dutch, and which can then call software that performs the correct action.

The assignment

You will explore the options for creating your own virtual assistant so that there is more freedom for language support and external links. You conduct research into various tools such as LUIS or Dialogflow for understanding the user and then linking this to a software application in the context of healthcare. A Proof of Concept with a possible solution can, for example, be tested on people with illness or the elderly.
