A good set of test data. A very important part if you work as a data engineer. So that you can properly test what you have built, outside of production. Using production data is of course not possible. But could you use AI to select/generate edge cases? You will find out during this assignment.

As a data engineer, you want to be able to test that what you have created, for example ETL pipelines that contain business logic, actually does what you expected. Not only on a technical level, but also functionally. For this you need a good, representative set of test data. How do you get that data? Unfortunately, it is not as simple as it seems: using production data in a test environment is of course a no-go, but how do you get a workable set of data that maintains all existing relationships between fields, columns, tables, etc.? And how do you know whether you have enough 'edge cases' in your test data?

The assignment

During this graduation assignment you will investigate whether and how we can use AI to generate test data.

• Investigate what is already possible in the field of generating (synthetic) test data
• Investigate how test data from different sources can be generated and combined
• See if it is possible to use AI to select/generate edge cases (specification by example?)
• Create (eventually) a PoC solution where you show to what extent AI is useful in generating test data
