Job Description

Conduct independent and collaborative scientific studies and research related to the care of the trauma injured patient. As a Trauma Clinical Research Specialist you will lead all aspects of trauma research from study design and protocol development, to study execution and data capture, to data analysis and publication. Collaborate and consult in the management of complex patient and family care by demonstrating clinical expertise within the Trauma Program through the integration of advanced skills, knowledge, competencies, and practice. You will have the opportunity to work directly with patients to capture patient-reported outcomes (PROs) data during all phases of patient care. You will be expected to lead the creation and production of high-impact journal publications and conference presentations. You may also work on select industry-sponsored research studies to support enrolling patients into one or more clinical trials. We are looking for an entrepreneurial individual who can collaborate with medical staff leadership, and independently work to drive projects to completion. We are interested in people with a passion for research and a desire to improve clinical care.

  • Work closely with trauma surgeons to design and implement a patient-reported outcomes (PRO) data collection system and processes. Engage with patients to ensure all data is collected across time points. Develop QA processes to ensure that data is complete and accurate.
  • Support SAMC trauma research agenda by working with medical staff and SAMC’s executive team to identify impactful research opportunities, design and execute high-quality studies, and communicate research results to key internal and external stakeholders
  • Support SAMC’s trauma team to identify patients that are candidates for ongoing industry sponsored clinical trials. Assist with on-going coordination of study visits with the research team to ensure protocol adherence.
  • Ability to work independently to carry research studies to completion, analyze data, and author manuscript and conference presentations. Must be able to effectively communicate study results to a wide range of audiences.

Education

  • Ph.D., MSN, MPH, or M.S. in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or Epidemiology, or Nursing.
  • Expertise in design, data science and statistical modeling
  • 2+ years professional experience with data science/statistical projects in a clinical area
  • Passion to address important questions with evidence-based data
  • Strong fluency SQL and Python, R, or related statistical software packages preferred
  • Understanding of C#/.Net API and web stacks (HTML/JS) are highly desirable
  • Ability to work directly with trauma patients
  • Ability to complete clinical research training modules to function the assigned duties

Experience

  • Required Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of recent clinical nursing and/or research experience in designated or related specialty.
  • Preferred Experience: Preferred research experience in trauma, emergency medicine, or intensive care. Effective public speaker in both small and large group settings. Proven ability to work autonomously and in collaboration with other health care providers, students, instructors, and leaders.

License and Certifications

  • Required Education: MS, MSN, or PhD, Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, or related field
  • Preferred Education: PhD/DNP in related field
  • Required License/ Certifications: If RN - current Licensure as Registered Nurse with Texas Board of Nursing or compact state as defined by TX Board of Nursing
  • Preferred License/ Certifications: If RN - national certification as clinical nurse specialist

PREFERRED:

  • Prior experience with research in trauma
  • Experience writing papers and publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • Strong ability to communicate scientific findings via internal reports and to external audiences
  • Strong team player and understands importance of providing research concierge services with our physicians to advance clinical research
  • Self-starter mindset to actively contribute to St. David’s South Austin trauma research initiatives
