Job Description

The Data Engineering team develops real-time monitoring, machine learning, and other Artificial Intelligence technologies and platforms to support clinical business processes and performance-improvement initiatives related to HCA's Clinical Innovation & Transformation (CT&I) strategy. We engage with stakeholders throughout HCA to identify how these techniques can transform our operations, and then we deliver innovative solutions to turn these opportunities into reality. In practice, this means driving clinical decisions/operations with data and ensuring clinicians can focus on patients, not computers. Job Summary: Effective data & analytical products require a firm foundation of high-quality infrastructure and DevOps practices.

The Operations Engineer, Data Engineering provides input and expertise to define and support the Data Engineering and Data Science strategies of the company. This person engages with a variety of stakeholders to analyze and understand the data sources and access patterns required for successful data product development. The Operations Engineer capitalizes on opportunities to deliver products efficiently by focusing on capabilities, platforms, architecture, and infrastructure to lower development cost and increase maintainability over time. Engagement across leadership and development communities is critical to success in this position. These communities include:

  • HCA IPS (Information Protection and Security) policy consultants and engineers
  • HCA ITG (Information Technology Group) technology/platform stewards
  • HCA Data Scientists, Data Analysts, and Application Engineers With an understanding of the business domain, and the strategic value of our data, this person will work with the necessary teams to:
  • Explore and implement platforms and technologies that provide capabilities for data product development.
  • Maintains a high degree of operational stability, by leveraging automation, instrumentation, continuous integration/deployment and additional DevOps principals.
  • Facilitate auditability and ensure adherence to enterprise standards for infrastructure, security and reliability.
  • Communicate with stakeholders proactively, ensuring operational awareness in timely and transparent manner. Report root cause analysis/ postmortem documentation publicly.

 Maintain an on-call presence, including engineers from operations and development. To support these initiatives, this person must have both strong business domain understanding and technical proficiency. They will work with Data Scientists, Infrastructure Engineers, Operations Teams, and Architects to prototype solutions that may support the Data Engineering initiatives.

Education and Experience

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in technology companies or consulting services, or equivalent skills
  • BA/BS degree or equivalent with specialization in engineering, marketing, finance, business, technology, or related fields.
  • MBA or equivalent business focused post-graduate degree, or relevant experience
  • Operations engineer experiences in large business environments
  • Excellent interpersonal skill: ability to effectively lead and work with a variety of organizations, management levels, cultures, and personalities
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to navigate complex organizational structures and manage senior relationships; ability to influence widely without authority
  • Analytics background and familiarity with data warehousing concepts and data engineering approaches Proven ability to collaborate with othering development/engineering groups to build service-oriented architectures
  • Focus on operational characteristics of solutions developed. DevOps mindset.
  • Strong data analytical skills with tools such as SQL, Python, and R
  • Strong development skills with broad understanding of computer science, language characteristics, architectural and design pedigree.
  • Strong DevOps skills, including infrastructure-as-code and automation experience.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and techniques to support the design and development of Data Management solutions
  • Proven ability to mentor and teach other engineers
  • Proven track record of taking ownership and driving results: operational excellence mindset and data driven.
  • Exceptional communication (both written and verbal) skills; excellent at communicating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and ability to develop executive level messaging, reports, and presentations.
