Juniper Legal Organization (JLO) is a global and diverse in-house team of dedicated legal professionals who share a passion to serve as a competitive advantage to Juniper Networks. JLO is looking for an Intellectual Property (IP) Attorney who personifies the Juniper Way: Be Bold, Build Trust and Deliver Excellence. 

The IP Attorney will join the Product, Intellectual Property, Privacy, and Procurement (PIPP) Legal Team and report to the Head of Patents and Standards. The candidate will work alongside the team of IP attorneys to support the Patent & Standards Team and extend support for other IP-related matters. IP plays a critical part in protecting and providing value to Juniper’s products and services. The PIPP Team collaborates closely with internal stakeholders across a broad array of functional areas at Juniper for the successful operation of Juniper’s IP programs, and protection of Juniper’s IP rights, mitigation of IP risks, and creation of valuable IP through development of Juniper’s world-class IP portfolio.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a lead patent attorney to manage Juniper’s worldwide patent portfolio for a variety of Juniper businesses spanning multiple geographies.
  • Proactively engage with business leads of various functions (e.g., product, engineering, sales, and management) to devise and execute IP strategies to align with business strategy, competitive outlook, and risk landscape.
  • Advise business leads on patent-related issues and develop technical knowledge in areas of responsibility.
  • Support patent team for patent and IP training and awareness, and engagement of client programs for business and clients.
  • Oversee and manage business/technology-focused Patent Review Committees and facilitate invention disclosure review and patent discussions.
  • Drive engagement with business including harvesting, mining, and brainstorming for patentable inventions to develop patent portfolio according to business strategy.
  • Manage and supervise outside legal counsel for management of the portfolio, including filing and prosecution.
  • Drive on-going patent portfolio analyses of industry and competitors to aide in portfolio management and development strategy for creation of value and mitigation of risk.
  • Participate in third party alliances, memberships, and organizations focused on IP and Standards issues and defense.
  • Support transactions with IP due diligence and integration for mergers, acquisitions, and/or divestitures. 
  • Support patent licensing, defensive initiatives, and enforcement activities including patent infringement analysis, due diligence, evidence case development, and clearance. 
  • Support IP team for IP transactions, open source, standards, and other business engagements aligned with technical and areas of responsibility. 
  • Support the team and outside counsel with development, management, and execution of IP programs and processes through an IP management system and analytic dashboards/tools. 
  • Participate with IP team for management of projects, resources, policy, and procedures aimed to increase program efficiency, manage costs, and reduce business risks.
  • Assist in development and lead in communication of reports on IP-related matters to senior leadership, stakeholders, and IP community aligned with designated areas of responsibility.
  • Be an active leader and contributor on project teams for team presentations, guidelines, process, and support of other IP initiatives, and manage associated project deadlines and actions for completion.
  • Assist team in developing and leveraging IP dashboards to support management, tracking, and reporting on IP programs and related metrics.

Experience and Qualifications: 

  • A patent attorney registered and in good standing with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO), and registered with at least one state bar (preferably California) within the 50 states of the U.S.
  • Prefer experience in development and/or use of data analytics for patent development, risk mitigation, licensing, and/or enforcement.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to take the lead on a project, manage, and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Strong client/customer service focus
  • Strong people skills including the ability to develop healthy working relationships through effective listening, communication, and the building of trust.
  • Ability to thrive in a high functioning, demanding environment.
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • At least a Bachelor of Science degree, or equivalent education, in computer engineering, computer science, or a related engineering field capable of understanding networking, telecommunications, computing infrastructure technologies (e.g., cloud-native platforms), and/or related application of artificial intelligence methodologies. 
  • An attorney with at least 4 years of experience in patent practice, preferably a combination of patent development (e.g., preparation and prosecution) at a reputable law firm and IP and patent portfolio management and protection as in-house IP counsel. Willing to consider candidates with more experience depending on qualifications.
  • Prefer strong technical experience in engineering and/or patents involving networking, telecommunications, and/or computing infrastructure technologies. 
  • Solid understanding of US and foreign patent practice.
  • Prefer experience working with technical development and industry organizations (e.g., standards, development organizations, standards setting organizations, industry associations, and consortiums), patent/licensing pools, and related IP licensing.
  • Experience in IP-related agreements, IP licensing, patent litigation, and/or patent enforcement.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and OneNote.

Minimum Salary: $120,000.00

Maximum Salary:$184,000.00
