Job Description

The position plays a pivotal role, one that spans managing skilled, technical teams, setting standards and frameworks, staying abreast of key technical innovations, creating and driving Dataworks engineering strategy, defining and building the Dataworks organization, developing organizational, operational, delivery and governance models and facilitating the delivery of key business initiatives. S/he acts as a “universal translator” between customers and partners as well as internal teams inclusive of IT, business, software engineers and data scientists, working hand-in-hand with these multi-disciplinary teams.

Although the primary responsibility for writing code and building data driven products and technology lies with the team, this is nevertheless considered a “manager-doer” role, where familiarity with the details of the work and the tech stack will be essential. In addition, the Director will be responsible for leading an organization focused on continued training and up-skilling of the Data Engineering Team, as well as ensuring that the pyramid s/he manages is appropriately sized and skilled for the set of initiatives in flight and projects where such expertise is required.

The position reports to Senior Vice President of Data Engineering and Data Science and will be based in Chennai, India.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, a related quantitative field such as Engineering or Mathematics or equivalent formal training or work experience.
• Extensive knowledge and experience in data ingestion, engineering, reporting and analytics framework in a cloud environment
• Extensive knowledge and experience in machine learning frameworks including design, development and implementation of highly complex internal and external facing application.
• Extensive knowledge and experience in Information Systems including design, development and implementation of large batch or online transaction-based systems.
• Strong understanding of the transportation industry, competitors, and evolving technologies desirable.
• Strong Experience providing leadership in a general planning or consulting setting.
• At least 5 years’ experience as a leader or a senior member of multi-function project teams.
• Extensive experience in developing strategy aligned to vision laid out by Sr. Leadership
• Ability to manage ambiguous situation and crucial conversations with internal and external teams as needed
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• A related advanced degree may offset the related experience requirements.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities:

• Establish a clear vision and strategy for the Dataworks India team working together with internal and external stakeholders.
• Ability to make decisions on deviations from set processes by analyzing risk Vs reward
• Build a high performing organization that embraces new ways of working to deliver data driven business value using modern cloud technologies and tools, open platforms, big data best practices and fully automated software delivery

• Drive the execution of new digital platforms in partnership with the customer experience, marketing, operations, and information technology team and collaborate with external partners to enable a streamlined customer experience
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to facilitate the execution of the digital strategies through effective oversight, prioritization, and resource allocation
• Negotiate, nurture, and grow relationships with larger data platforms to grow existing revenue and identify new business streams for FedEx
• Identify opportunities to differentiate and transform digital solutions, develop business case(s) to support new digital products and experiences, and indirectly oversee cross-functional teams accountable for the digital experience delivery and KPI (key performance indicator) definitions
• Accountable for the evolution and delivery of digital experiences, technology and products to include identifying opportunities to transform digital solutions and the delivery of existing services and capabilities, managing external digital consumer experience vendors, and leading experience design (XD), user design experience (UX) and user interface design (UI)

• Fluency with distributed and cloud environments and a deep understanding of how to balance computational considerations with theoretical properties
• Detailed knowledge of the Microsoft Azure tooling for large-scale data engineering efforts and deployments is highly preferred
• A compelling track record of designing and deploying large scale technical solutions, which deliver tangible, ongoing value
• Direct experience having built and deployed robust, complex production systems that implement modern, data scientific methods at scale
• Ability to context-switch, to provide support to dispersed teams to unblock an especially challenging technical obstacle, and to work through problems as they are still being defined
• Demonstrated ability to deliver technical projects with a team, often working under tight time constraints to deliver value
• An ‘engineering’ mindset, willing to make rapid, pragmatic decisions to improve performance, accelerate progress or magnify impact
