Job Description

Scope of Position:

Lead efforts to anticipate and mitigate failure modes of materials, design, and process in product development initiatives. Collaborate with research, development, manufacturing, commercial, and other teams to understand the opportunity, describe solution concepts, and identify failure modes by assessing concept functionality and how well it meets the needs of the opportunity. Define testing to characterize functionality and validate reliability via failure rate calculations/ modeling/ life predictions. Develop technical insight into root cause and make recommendations to improve performance. Ensure problems are addressed for efficient development of robust products and processes with fewer failure modes and longer life-times across a range of technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with scientists and customers to understand and address the technical design parameters that drive product performance.
  • Determine if the products meet the requirements and provide guidance on optimization.
  • Ensure that the process delivers the design intent.
  • Understand requirements and potential solution concept(s) and lead assessments on the design and process to identify concerns and key needs.
  • Use the assessments to define customized programs to prioritize and address key needs.
  • Lead the team through the defined program.
  • Develop and lead an experimental and characterization strategy to yield deeper insight and make materials/ design/ process recommendations.
  • Use technical skills to lead Root Cause Analysis/ Problem Solving & Corrective Action activities; interacting with technical experts as required for failure analysis, and problem solving; explore broad solution space.
  • Complete statistical data analysis and interpretation to enable understanding and guidance on activities.
  • Create and execute experimental plans (DOE) to generate data for life predictions/models using understanding of failure modes and accelerants, and statistical/mathematical predictive modeling skills. Leverage/create software as needed. Develop/communicate risk assessments.
  • Clear communication of plans, updates, and recommendations to appropriate personnel.

Required Skills:

  • Understands technology - can lead design assessments and facilitate discussions
  • Statistics/Data Analysis
  • Experimental skills – test methods execution and ability to improve
  • Physics of Failure/ Material property knowledge
  • Familiarity with reliability methods (QFD, FMEA, RCA, FTA, Life predictions, etc.)
  • Results & detail oriented, Rigorous, Self-motivated, Flexible, Multi-tasking, Leadership, Honesty
  • Ability to work successfully across organizations: research, development, manufacturing, commercial
  • Critical thinking/ problem solving with ability to make connections with broad knowledge of materials, physical properties, test methods and failure mechanisms.
  • Excellent communication skills – verbal and written

Preferred Skills:

  • Broad material/ chemistry/ mechanics/ experience
  • Advanced reliability and probability theory; statistics & stochastic processes; complex math modeling & data analytics; Optimization
  • Failure rate predictions/ life models; recommend screens/ demonstration tests.
  • Reliability Engineering
  • Environmental stress testing methodology knowledge (temp, humidity, power, mechanical, vibration, HALT, HASS, etc.)
  • Brittle Material, Glass and Ceramics knowledge
  • Working knowledge of characterization techniques – how to apply and interpret results
  • Evaluation of multi-material system reliability from a systems perspective.

Education and Experience:

  • A Technical Master’s degree is preferred or bachelor’s with appropriate experience.
  • Looking for at least 5 years’ experience in a product/process development type role.

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication/presentation skills, ranging from communicating with teams, management to sophisticated outside customers.
