Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

Works as a software development member within an agile team, building and improving frontend, backend, modeling, database, and/or devops capabilities in the Materials Informatics (MI) ecosystem of applications.

All MI products are cloud-based and hosted in an AWS VPC. Product features are tracked in Jira and managed by a Product Owner and Scrum Master. Products are built upon document-based, relational, or graph databases for backend storage, development frameworks such as FastAPI for middleware, and Javascript libraries such as Vue for the front end. Developers will engage in the CI/CD DevOps process using GitLab as the code repo, Jira for task tracking, Slack for collaboration, and Confluence for documentation.

This role will engage with Corning’s growing software engineering community in a hybrid role as a software developer and data scientist. As a member of an agile team with a software engineering and data science focus, you’ll work collaboratively with peers, share ideas and code that will contribute to the growth of the team, prototype, build, and enhance mathematical, modeling, and machine learning capabilities, and bring product improvements to life.

Desired candidates have strong software engineering and analytical skills, are able to think systemically and want to cultivate their passion for value-driven solution delivery.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Develop product capabilities under the guidance and direction of the Product owner and scrum master
  • Work in a cloud-based environment creating solutions using modern development platforms
  • Provide documentation that clearly reflects the delivered solutions
  • Participate in daily standup meetings
  • Present work in bi-weekly sprint reviews
  • Ideate and deliver value that enables Corning to increase productivity
  • Realize efficiencies and build useable customer experiences
  • Collaborate with other developers to sharpen one another’s skills
  • Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Normal Business Hours 8:00-5:00

Required Skills:

  • Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Data Science or Engineering, Information Systems
  • Experience working in a cloud-based environment (e.g. AWS, Azure, etc.)
  • Experience in implementing web applications
  • Experience with continuous integration, unit testing, and automated integration tests.
  • Understanding of Scrum and agile principles
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Dedication to and hands-on experience in performing technical code reviews
  • Follows through on commitments, executing quality work within expected time frames
  • Interested in developing a passion for value-driven solution delivery
  • Foundational communication and presentation skills, including articulating the rationale behind design decisions within their team

Education and Experience:

  • Must be a part of a college program looking to pursue an internship for college credits.
