Job Description

The Data Scientist is an integral member of the Dow Jones Measurement, Science & Analytics team. This candidate will mine and analyze complex structured and unstructured data sets using advanced statistical methods to drive data-driven decisions, perform research, analysis, and modeling on organizational data; develop and apply algorithms or models to key business metrics with the goal of improving operations or answering business questions.

This role will focus on Dow Jones’ B2B business, which includes products such as Factiva, Risk & Compliance, and Newswires. The candidate will work with customer-oriented data and will support a broad range of stakeholder groups across the B2B business, such as Marketing, Product, Sales, Finance, Content and Retention teams.

Responsibilities:

• Draw meaningful insights from large datasets, define key metrics to track performance, and develop actionable solutions to tackle business problems
• Use the Dow Jones terabyte-scale data lake to identify opportunities to enhance an understanding of the Dow Jones customer base and content consumption
• Use visualization tools to present complex models and business insights in a simple, engaging manner for business stakeholders
• Work closely with engineers to develop and deploy scalable machine learning applications
• Identify opportunities for new and innovative data projects. Ask smart questions, diagnose the real problem, and develop a long-term solution
• Be stewards of our data governance and data privacy standards; erring on validation with key stakeholders first to ensure accuracy of data is provided, reduce misinterpretation of data, and prevent misuse or dissemination of sensitive data.
• Thoroughly document the methodology and requirements of delivered projects to ensure transparency & reproducibility
• Communicate directly with business stakeholders to ensure accurate and relevant data insights.

Requirements

• 3+ years experience in a data analytics role
• Undergraduate or Graduate degree with a major in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Engineering, or related STEM major
• Programming experience with either Python or R; one other general-purpose programming language such as Java or C/C++ preferred
• Advanced SQL & relational database experience is a must. Experience with AWS Athena or BigQuery preferred. Experience with Big Data stack is a plus.
• Strong foundation in inferential statistics and machine learning algorithms
• Experience in visualization tools such as Tableau, PowerBI, etc.
• Strong capacity to communicate complex concepts in easy-to-understand terminology
• Ability to translate data and insight into a value-driving business plan
• Experience with off-the-shelf models from AWS, GCP, and Natural Language Processing is a plus
