Job Description

Flatiron UK is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Engineer to join our small startup team in London. We are in need of a technologist who is passionate about data and the potential for real-world evidence to accelerate cancer research and improve the lives of cancer patients around the world.

UK Office

Flatiron Health is a healthcare data and technology company that is building a connected platform enabling the development of actionable insights in cancer research. Our mission is to improve lives by learning from the experience of every cancer patient. We do this by helping cancer care providers and researchers gain access to high quality data about cancer treatments and outcomes in the real world.

We established our first international office in 2020 (in London) and are building a founding team here focused on transforming the use of healthcare data and improving outcomes for all cancer patients in the UK. If you’re interested in joining a small, fast-paced team focused on improving cancer care and accelerating cancer research across the globe, here’s what you need to know:

What You'll Do

Learning from the experience of every cancer patient involves exploring many available data sources, and building robust data pipelines and systems that scale, while maintaining a laser focus on data protection and security. We welcome full-stack engineers, aspiring architects, passionate backend engineers, data scientists, engineers that are enthusiastic about data, and emerging engineering leaders. As an engineer you will:

  • Be part of creating a new team and building company culture in a new office
  • Devise creative solutions to solve tough business, security and data privacy challenges
  • Rapidly iterate on products early in the development of product-market fit
  • Promote technical best practices with teammates and customers
  • Work with complex data pipelines using a variety of data processing tools
  • Bring or develop a deep knowledge of healthcare technology in the UK, including data sources, sector-wide requirements, and emerging trends
  • Work day-to-day with oncologists, product leaders, quantitative scientists and customers to understand their challenges and how technology can help solve them

Who You Are

You're an experienced software/data engineer with 5+ years of experience developing robust and scalable solutions. You're passionate about solving real-world problems with modern technologies and building elegant, scalable systems. You write simple, sophisticated, well-structured and well tested code that drives new features and improvements.

  • You hold a bachelors, masters, and/or Ph.D. in computer science or a related field
  • You have worked in a collaborative agile development environment using programming languages like Python, C++, SQL, Java and R, but are also a quick learner who can easily pick up new programming languages as needed
  • You are comfortable with ambiguity - you’re able to quickly develop hypotheses with limited information and have a demonstrated ability to learn complex concepts quickly
  • You are excited to work in a startup environment and will do whatever it takes to get the job done. You have an entrepreneurial spirit, “get it done” mentality, a nose for value and empathy for your customer
  • You are an effective communicator who is equally comfortable telling a compelling story to stakeholders, clinicians, engineers and customers.
  • You care more about our customers and advancing cancer treatment than you do about dealing with the newest data processing techniques

You're excited by the prospect of rolling up your sleeves and using technology to tackle meaningful problems each and every day. You're a kind, passionate and collaborative problem-solver who seeks and gives honest feedback and values the opportunity to improve the lives of cancer patients.

If this sounds like you, you'll fit right in at Flatiron.

A career at Flatiron is a chance to work with everyone involved in the future of cancer care and research—all under one roof. Researchers, data scientists, product teams, clinicians, technologists and many more all work together to improve cancer care and accelerate research.

Flatiron Health

At Flatiron, we believe that learning from the experience of every cancer patient is an imperative — it is the key to accelerating research and continuing to improve the quality of care. What stands in the way is an overwhelming technology challenge: Much of the available, real-world clinical data is unstructured and stored across thousands of disconnected community clinics, medical centers and hospitals.
