Job Description

The Code Generation team at OpenAI researches and develops AI programmers - neural models that write, debug and improve computer programs. Creating AI which can solve hard symbolic reasoning problems is one of the most difficult problems in modern deep learning and we’re attacking it head-on.

We seek new ways for increasingly powerful AI systems to interact with the world through a very general interface of computer code. Our first release, Codex, demonstrates the power of neural program synthesis through a family of large generative models that power GitHub Copilot. We’re excited to explore creative new interactions which will reshape the way the industry thinks about coding.

About the role

On the Code Generation team, you’ll work at the very center of OpenAI’s mission to create artificial general intelligent AI systems that benefit all of humanity. In our day-to-day work, we build on top of all the achievements of OpenAI to date, by training some of the largest models ever trained, studying scaling laws, running distributed reinforcement learning, and aligning our most capable models. We seek a talented Research Engineer to us deliver the next breakthrough.

In this role, you will:

  • Write clean and performant code to train ML models, focusing on throughput, stability, and ML metrics
  • Build interfaces for humans to interact with new generations of code-generating models
  • Debug complex distributed systems
  • Clean and analyze large datasets
  • Implement sandboxing techniques for safe code execution

This might be a good match if you:

  • Have strong programming and problem-solving skills, with a 3+ year track record of relevant engineering experience
  • Are a team player: we believe in working collectively towards a common goal.
  • Value impact over novelty: a surprising number of very hard problems can be solved with a careful application of existing techniques.
  • Aren’t afraid of grunt work: we often see that the most dramatic results are achieved with hard, unglamorous work

Nice to have:

  • Past experience with large distributed machine learning projects
  • Experience managing annotations by human contractors
