The Senior Data Scientist drives continuous learning and improvement across United’s loyalty program, MileagePlus. Using some of the most complete member data available in any industry, the data science team is responsible for finding new opportunities to develop the program and new product opportunities with insights and models that shape business outcomes. This person will be expected to provide the example which other data scientists on the team can follow to better produce outcomes for the business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with stakeholders on business challenges and opportunities
  • Educate others on opportunities to model insights
  • Coordinate with cross functional teams to plan and implement solutions
  • Dig into business problems by experimenting with models that will need to be tested and validated on new data resources or changing business environments
  • Provide best practice recommendations to team members
  • Lead by example, documenting success and failures alike in order to build long-term knowledge
  • Influence decision-makers and peers alike toward a more data-centric view of problem-solving

NOTE: This position provides a hybrid work arrangement including days worked onsite at our Chicago office location and remotely.

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in business, marketing, or quantitative field of study (statistics, engineering, analytics, information systems, aviation management, or related degree)
  • 3+ years of experience in an analytics role using relational databases hands-on
  • 1+ year of experience in core data science
  • Experience working with large datasets for the purposes of statistical analysis such as supervised or unsupervised learning
  • Experience with SQL
  • Experience using Python for data manipulation, cleaning, model training and evaluation.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Master's degree in statistics, mathematics, or business analytics
  • 3+ year in core data science
  • 1+ year in the travel industry
  • 1+ year in marketing or loyalty studies
  • Experience with reinforcement learning, causal inference, recommendation engines
  • Experience training and deploying models with AWS.
  • Experience with pyspark.
