Job Description

We are looking for a motivated individual to (1) lead analysis of novel molecular cancer datasets to improve patient care and (2) contribute to open-source biomedical software tools that will be used around the world. Key datasets for analysis include Moffitt Total Cancer Care (https://www.moffitt.org/research-science/total-cancer-care/) and ORIEN Avatar (https://www.oriencancer.org/research-programs). Open-source software projects that this individual will contribute to are Galaxy (https://galaxyproject.org/) and the NHGRI AnVIL (https://anvilproject.org/). An ideal fit for this position is an individual who is excited about doing high-quality molecular data analyses, enjoys learning new technical skills, and excels in a collaborative environment.

This position is part of the Goecks Laboratory (http://goeckslab.org/), which is in the Departments of Machine Learning and Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at the Moffitt Cancer Center. The Goecks Laboratory develops data science methods and software tools to advance cancer research and patient care. Our areas of technical focus are computational infrastructure, cloud computing, and machine learning. Our areas of cancer research include precision oncology and spatial tumor analyses.

Position Highlights:

  • Lead data analyses that will be used at Moffitt and across the world to help advance cancer research and patient care.
  • Learn new technical skills in important topics such as machine learning, data engineering, and visualization dashboards.
  • Work in a dynamic environment with opportunities to collaborate with biomedical data scientists, software engineers, cancer biology researchers, and physicians.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Expertise in the following areas: (1) machine learning; (2) parametric and non-parametric statistical analysis approaches; and (3) analysis pipeline usage and development. Analysis experience in a scientific discipline is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Python programming languages plus some experience with another programming language such as R, Perl, C#, or Java. Knowledge of the command line and statistical & machine learning software libraries is preferred.
  • Experience as a member of an interdisciplinary team that collaborates to (a) identify hypotheses/questions to drive data analyses and (b) review analysis results and use them to advance organizational goals. Experience communicating data analyses to a diverse set of stakeholders is preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaboration: Work with interdisciplinary team to define and perform data analyses, build and maintain common code repository, and communicate work to stakeholders. (25%)
  • Biomedical Data Analyses and Publications: Establish and employ best practices for omic, imaging and clinical data representation and analysis. Model and perform descriptive and predictive data analyses that drive the next generation of research and advance human health. Participate in communicating analysis results, such as through preparation of manuscripts, internal and external presentations, and grant applications. (25%)
  • Analysis Pipelines: Work with software development teams to implement biomedical data analysis workflows to support the research community with analytical advances and to disseminate best practices to the computational community. Provide documentation and user support allowing researchers across Moffitt to access and re-use analysis pipelines. (25%)
  • Data Management: Wrangle, clean, structure and store investigator data. Assist in building, populating and maintaining a data management system storing raw omic and imaging data, sample metadata, data generation and data processing provenance, clinical data, and custom analysis results. (10%)
  • Career Development: Participate in activities that enhance ability to do assigned work. This may include attending classes, seminars, and other training forums; staying current in relevant literature; and participating in staff meetings and other informational sessions. (15%)

Credentials and Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or M.D. in a Quantitative Field such as Data Science, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Statistics, or Biomedical Engineering

Preference given to someone with previous Scientist experience.
