What you will do:

Ancestry seeks an exceptional, passionate, and highly motivated Computational Genomics Scientist, Intern to join our DNA Science team this summer. The DNA Science team works on cutting-edge research, leveraging genomic data and family history records from tens of millions of people to develop novel products that enable all people to discover, preserve, and share their family history. As a Computational Genomics Scientist intern on the DNA Science team, you will work closely with a team of experienced population geneticists, computational biologists, and data scientists to analyze and interpret human genomic, phenotypic, pedigree, and other data. Your work will contribute to AncestryDNA’s efforts to shed light on human genomic diversity, population history, and our unique family histories. You will be expected to complete a semi-independent research project, and your experiences will include the following: 

  • You will collaborate with a mentor on the AncestryDNA Science team to develop, complete, and present the results of an impactful semi-independent research project
  • You will carefully plan the questions, data, and analysis tools needed to successfully complete your project
  • You will read relevant scientific literature and summarize important findings
  • You will apply or develop computational tools to analyze genomic data, draw appropriate scientific conclusions, and visualize your results
  • You will be expected to maintain clear documentation of your work
  • You will present your research findings to the AncestryDNA Science team at the end of the internship

Who You Are: 

  • Currently pursuing a graduate degree in computational genomics, or a related technical field. Outstanding undergraduate candidates will be considered
  • Strong analytical and computational problem-solving skills
  • Independent, but with a demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Proficiency in Python is desired
  • Previous research experience in computational genomics, population genetics, or bioinformatics is desired
  • Fundamental understanding of human genetics, inheritance, and population structure is a plus
  • Previous experience working with large datasets and experience using cloud computing resources is optional but beneficial 

Internship Program Details:

  • Students must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. educational institution with a graduation date after August 2024.
  • Summer 2024 program dates are May 13 – September 6 (Please note we will have three intern onboarding dates to choose from: May 13th, May 28th, and June 10th. Students may offboard every Friday, beginning August 9th. All internships must be wrapped up by September 6th).
  • FULLY PAID temporary housing and travel to and from the internship are provided.
  • All summer internships will be in Lehi, Utah. You will work a combined hybrid and office-based schedule that allows you to choose which days you come into the office and which days you work from temporary housing/home (Utah students).
  • Interns have the opportunity to network and partner with other interns and industry-leading professionals.
  • You will participate in engaging events, including executive speaker sessions, professional development, and our annual Intern Days to showcase your project and work.
  • You will be required to work a full-time schedule (40 hours/week), Monday-Friday.
  • Company-issued laptop and equipment will be provided for the duration of the internship program.
