Job Description

Ancestry is looking for an exceptional, passionate, and highly motivated Data Governance & Quality Analytics, Intern to join our Data Governance & Quality Analytics team. The Data Governance & Quality Analytics team coordinates and facilitates Data Governance & Quality practices at Ancestry by translating policy into action, facilitating collaboration, gathering requirements for data enhancements, guiding teams to (regulatory and policy) compliance, and monitoring data for quality, consistency, and accuracy. We believe data is an asset. As a Data Governance & Quality Analytics Intern on the Data Governance & Quality Analytics team, you may perform/support any combination of the following initiatives depending on your technical strengths:

  • Engage in cross-functional collaboration by meeting with various stakeholders and product owners to understand business needs, data flows and technical details, or to foster collaboration and gather requirements for data assets and data documentation (data definitions or data lineage)
  • Organize requirements gathering, translating the business needs and requirements into clear and logical technical requirements, or help create schemas for new data
  • Supporting Data Quality support efforts by building data quality audits which compare data across disparate systems (using Information Builders iWay/Omni-gen data quality suite tools) 
  • Provide engineering support for our data catalog tool Alation (connecting new drivers or performing a quarterly upgrade) and data quality tool iWay (installation, upgrade, deployment)
  • Lead data curation efforts (inventory and define data in Alation, our data catalog) by helping with working groups or automating processes
  • Audit or automate Data Classification (identification of sensitive data) audits to check that sensitive data is recorded and treated correctly, or assist in policy implementation
  • Support Data Retention (not keeping data longer than needed) efforts by participating in the creation of retention schedules, process automation, or periodic review of proper implementation
  • Perform various data standardization/classification efforts, such as gathering requirements, documenting, and communicating changes to stakeholders
  • Dig into ad hoc data quality issue research and root cause analysis, or participate in End to End testing of new data features
  • Build reporting in Tableau or other visualization tool to demonstrate results from a data quality audits, alerting dashboards, or other Data Quality needs

Who you are: 

  • Working towards earning a BS or MS in Management Information Systems, Business Intelligence, Information Science, or any related field.
  • Curious, have an analytical mind, and bring creative solutions
  • Interested in Data Governance and Data Quality
  • Comfortable or skilled with SQL and Python (bonus) or other language(s), and familiar with Tableau or other data visualization tool
  • Some experience with cloud computing (like AWS) technology (bonus)
  • Skilled in writing and communicating complex information in simple language

Internship Program Details:

  • Students must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. educational institution with a graduation date after August 2023. 
  • Summer 2023 program dates are May 15 – September 8 (Please note that we will have three intern onboarding dates to choose from: May 15th, June 5th and June 20th. Students may offboard every Friday, beginning August 11th. All internships must be wrapped up by September 8th.)
  • FULLY PAID temporary housing and travel to and from internship
  • All summer internships will be in Lehi, Utah. You will work a combined hybrid and office-based schedule that allows you to choose which days you come into the office and which days you work from temporary housing/home (Utah students).
  • Interns have the opportunity to network and partner with other interns and industry-leading professionals
  • You will participate in engaging events including executive speaker sessions, professional development, and our annual Intern Days to showcase your project and work. 
  • Full-time schedule (40 hours/week) required; Monday-Friday
  • Company-issued laptop and equipment provided for the duration of the internship program
