Job Description

At Aerospace, we are committed to providing an inclusive and diverse workplace for all employees to share in our common passion and aspiration – to carry out a mission much bigger than ourselves.

The Embedded and Specialized Computing Department is seeking a Specialized Embedded Engineer interested in building leading edge software and hardware prototypes with a focus on rapid prototyping, spacecraft security, and accelerated computing. These prototypes and the associated lessons learned are used to make recommendations for government missions. In this research-oriented role, the ideal candidate would excel at both working collaboratively with project teams and providing subject matter expertise to our customers.

Example projects include design of custom single-board processing payloads, cryptographic integration for small satellites, optimization of artificial intelligence toolchains for embedded use cases, and evaluation of state-of-the-art architectures for customer missions. Members of this group provide design and implementation support to a wide range of customers including the Space Force’s Space Systems Command (SSC), the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), and other civil customers (e.g. NASA).

This position is a hybrid work model and can work partially remotely with some onsite work required in El Segundo, CA, or Chantilly, Va.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Implement specialized embedded compute products focused on accelerated computing, spacecraft security, or sensors especially for satellite applications.
  • Perform research, prototyping, and hands-on development to solve unique challenges for both internal and external customer missions.
  • Enable junior staff to learn and grow through new work opportunities, trainings, and mentorship.
  • Propose innovative research efforts to advance the department's product and knowledge lines.
  • Work with management to advise on new or changing strategic imperatives for the department based on commercial technology shifts and staff interests.

This position can be filled as Specialized Embedded Engineer as a Sr. Member of Technical Staff (Sr. MTS) or Engineering Specialist.

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements for Specialized Embedded Engineer – Sr. MTS:

  • Experience with laboratory tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, and multimeters.
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

Minimum Requirements for Specialized Embedded Engineer – Engineering Specialist:

  • All of the above requirements for Sr. MTS
  • 8 or more years of relevant experience in software programming, embedded systems, and/or hardware design

How You Can Stand out

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:

  • Understanding of real-time, embedded, size and power constrained systems. Linux system bring-up a plus, e.g., U-Boot and Linux customization on Xilinx, Microsemi, or Intel FPGA boards.
  • FPGA Development and HDL (Verilog, VHDL) experience with a focus of HDL architecture.
  • Experience designing custom Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) for processor or SoC integration on flight payloads.
  • Experience with hardware bring-up: validating power configuration, clock metrics, and data transfer.
  • Working knowledge of firmware development (baremetal or RTS) on Arm Cortex-M/R/A microcontrollers or SoCs.
  • Strong experience with the Linux platform as both user and developer: tools, application development workflow, system programming.
  • Experience with AI at the edge or AI with constrained resources, e.g. use of quantization in neural network applications.
  • Working knowledge of typical hardware interfaces: I2C, SPI, GPIO, UART, etc. Working knowledge of typical subsystems (e.g., eMMc, raw NAND, etc.) and associated system level software integration.

We offer a competitive compensation package where you’ll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to our business.
