The mission of the Personalization AI team is to deeply understand Zillow’s users, including their needs, preferences and the stage in their journey, and predict their intent. We own multiple modeling pipelines and produce several key data sets such as user preference profile, propensity models, home recommendations, and user level home insights. We proliferate machine learning solutions into new product and business domains. Our internal business partners include the Shopping Product, Premier Agent business and Marketing teams. You will be joining an accomplished team of Machine Learning Engineers and Applied Scientists who build scalable and resilient AI solutions.

About the role

We are seeking an inquisitive Applied Scientist intern who will help us develop creative solutions using machine learning to the broad business problems we are solving. The personalization team is at the core of Zillow’s mission to “Give people the power to unlock life’s next chapter.

As an intern on our team, you will get to:

  • Collaborate with other Applied Scientists and Engineers to analyze terabytes of data to improve our understanding of how users use Zillow.
  • Build models to predict a customer’s intent and what homes we should recommend to them.
  • Work closely with the team to scale models from a notebook prototype to production.
  • Share your discoveries and insights within the team, and with our collaborators across the company.

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. Remote employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice which must be identified to the Company. Employees may live in any of the 50 US States, with limited exceptions. In certain cases, an employee in a remote-designated job may need to live in a specific region or time zone to support customers or clients as part of their role.

In Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada and New York City the standard base pay range for this role is $94,000.00 - $140,000.00 Annually. This base pay range is specific to Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada and New York City and may not be applicable to other locations.

Who you are

  • In the process of completing a Master’s or PhD in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Econometrics, Physics, Earth Sciences, or related scientific field involving mathematical modeling (preferred) with a graduation date between December 2023 and July 2024
  • Familiar with ML pipelines/workflows, validation frameworks - backtesting, model A/B testing.
  • Has good knowledge of ML Frameworks internals (e.g. ScikitLearn, Pytorch, Tensorflow, XgBoost) and ML Algorithms
  • Passionate about learning and growing your Applied Science skills into Machine Learning-specific problem domains
  • Proficiency in Python is highly desirable!
  • Ability to work with large data sets using Cloud Services (AWS/Azure) and distributed computation (Spark) is highly desired
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
