This position primarily involves a hybrid work schedule - working remotely: Monday & Friday / on site: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The Advanced Analytics team at New York Life Direct serves as an internal data science consulting group which aims to design, create, and implement innovative data-driven solutions for the company. We do this by engaging in a wide variety of projects that range from Marketing Analytics, Customer Segmentation, Market Opportunity Analyses and Fraud Risk prevention to general experimental design, and predictive modeling work. We also partner with actuaries and underwriters to lend our expertise on new and novel approaches to age old problems and methodologies.

Data Scientists on the Advanced Analytics team typically work with a high degree of ownership and autonomy while also having access to a collaborative environment and several senior data scientists for guidance. They are also typically key members in meetings and cross-functional teams across the business. The project work a data scientist on the Advanced Analytics team engages in is also very rewarding because it often directly impacts the business and in turn is greatly valued.

We are seeking a Data Scientist to tackle exciting business problems at New York Life Direct Tampa.

Typical example responsibilities are:

  • Leads and contributes to: data analysis and modeling projects from project/sample design, business review meetings with internal and external clients deriving requirements/deliverables, reception and processing of data, performing analyses and modeling to final reports/presentations, communication of results and implementation support.
  • Utilizes data wrangling/data matching/ETL techniques while programming in several languages to explore a variety of data sources, gain data expertise, perform summary analyses and prepare modeling datasets.
  • Utilizes advanced statistical and machine learning techniques to create high-performing predictive models and creative analyses to address business objectives and client needs. Tests new statistical and machine learning analysis methods and data sources for continual improvement of quantitative solutions.
  • Proactively and effectively communicates in various verbal and written formats with internal stakeholders on product design, data specification, model implementations, with partners on collaboration ideas and specifics, with clients and account teams on project/test results, opportunities, questions. Resolves problems and removes obstacles to timely and high-quality project completion.

A standard example project flow on the team would typically be as follows:

  • Meet with business area to understand the problem that is being addressed or the current need
  • Start mapping out a solution while providing scope and timelines
  • Gather data and use appropriate methodologies to develop analytical solution or model
  • Discuss with business area
  • Pilot, test, implement, monitor and maintain as necessary

This is the profile we are seeking for this position:

  • MS or PhD in one or more analytical / quantitative fields - Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering
  • Sound statistical knowledge in standard techniques: Logistic Regression, Cluster Analysis, Random Forests, Experimental Design, etc.
  • Some work experience with real data either in current job or in school
  • R, Python, SAS or Matlab experience
  • Familiarity with SQL
  • Some experience with a visualization tool such as Tableau or MicroStrategy
  • Microsoft Office - Excel / PowerPoint / Word
  • An interest in continued learning
  • High curiosity and an appreciation of discovery through data
  • A passion in making people understand how to solve problems through analytics
