Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you're near one), at home or a bit of both, it's up to you.

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

About the Role:

The Generate & Personalise group is all about ensuring that every individual Canva user has an experience that is best tailored to them, by ensuring that the most suitable content for their design is right at their fingertips. We build systems that provide tailored content recommendations, and we allow users to use new AI technologies to generate the perfect elements for their design. We are building out a platform to expose new generative AI models to hundreds of millions of users, and we need your help scaling it!

As a member of the AI media team, your role will be focused on:

• Maintaining and improving a generative AI model platform that generates millions of elements, every day.
• Building new features for our flagship text to image product, Magic Media.
• Writing and testing high-quality, reliable code in Java.
• Leading and delivering medium-sized projects autonomously.
• Contributing to the evolving backend tech stack as part of a highly functional and passionate team.
• Creating a truly delightful experience for our customers in a brand new product area, with a high degree of room for growth.

​What you'll be doing in this role:

• ​Your day-to-day activities will consist of solution design and hands-on software development – working closely with leads, designers, and product managers to deliver features and functionality to our customers all over the world.
• Once you’ve settled in and have a comfortable grasp of the product, environment, and processes, you’ll be given more responsibility and start leveraging your previous experience — bringing new ideas to the table concerning everything from feature development, to process improvement, and product suggestions.
• Developing and iterating on technical proposals – outlining how solutions will be structured and developed.
• Developing solutions you’ve designed from the ground up through to deployment into production.
• Identifying and addressing performance bottlenecks within the application and broader infrastructure.
• Participating in design meetings, hiring interviews, and code reviews.
• Performance debugging, benchmarking and building awesome things in general.

​You're probably a match if:

• You have firmly grounded computer science and engineering fundamentals including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns.
• You have commercial experience developing complex web applications in Java.
• You have familiarity with AWS Cloud Infrastructure and services such as EC2, ECS, and Terraform.
• You are experienced in designing and working with distributed systems that need to scale and be robust to sustain heavy traffic.
• (Desirable) You have a keen interest or passion for machine learning & AI, particularly generative AI models.
