Embedded within Kaiser Permanente Northern California’s Division of Research, the Kaiser Permanente Vaccine Study Center (KPVSC) is a leader in evaluating vaccines with a long history of collaboration with multiple federal agencies, particularly the CDC's Immunization Safety Office. The KPVSC has also been engaged in Phase II, III, and IV vaccine trials, collaborating with the pharmaceutical industry and FDA to help bring new vaccines into licensure and then to evaluate and ensure their safety. Most recently, the KPVSC has been heavily involved in performing clinical trials to bring COVID-19 vaccines to market and after they were in use, monitoring their safety and effectiveness through national collaborative research projects. Currently, KPVSC has a team of over 40 individuals, including programmer analysts, project managers, research assistants, nurses, and physicians. We are currently seeking an experienced Data Scientist to provide high-level analytic and statistical support for a portfolio of studies focused on vaccine research. This position would assume a lead data analyst role within our research group with responsibilities including independent analytic database development, data analysis and reporting, statistical consultation, interpretation of results, development or implementation of study tracking systems, development of standards, procedures and policies for data maintenance and quality control. They will provide a strong supporting role to Principal Investigators and project managers as needed to develop grant proposals, protocols, presentations, and publications.
The ideal candidate will possess expert proficiency in SAS, and/or R, the ability to perform data transformation and extraction from multiple administrative and clinical records databases, experience with creation, analytical manipulation, and interpretation of large databases, a strong understanding and experience with epidemiologic and statistical principles, including experience performing advanced statistical analyses experience with or a strong interest in working in vaccine research, and experience with UNIX or Linux (desirable but not required).
In addition to the responsibilities listed below, this position is also responsible for contributing to the publication process by writing method and results sections completely and independently; documenting processes and decision points; and outlining procedures This position is also responsible for writing and compiling manuals; overseeing the quality control effort; writing complex macros and distributable programs; creating advanced statistical models including identifying and appropriately addressing when assumptions have been violated; reviewing data for potential error, mistakes, and data quality issues; and breaking approved proposals into process steps.

Leads the development of advanced analytical and/or statistical models enabling informed business decisions by determining data and analytical requirements; translating models and gaining stakeholder buy-in for implementation; creating complex models leading to actionable insights; and testing, refining, and validating models.
Designs, implements, and automates business and reporting solutions by partnering with stakeholders to advise in their design, planning, and implementation while ensuring consistency and coherency; evaluating and summarizing data and results; creating summary statistics; designing data reports, visualizations, and/or interactive Business Intelligence (BI) reports; reporting to stakeholders on key findings; identifying needs for the development and implementation of additional reporting solutions; and preparing documentation as appropriate.
Drives the execution of creative data analytic approaches leading to actionable outcomes across functional areas, business and/or clinical lines by defining and calculating complex metrics to be analyzed; defining, calculating, and validating algorithms; and conducting complex analyses, including descriptive, correlational, inferential, and/or predictive statistics.
Prepares data for analytic efforts by integrating and consolidating data; ensuring data quality and accuracy; profiling data inaccuracies and recommending process improvements or system changes to enhance overall quality of the data; collaborating with stakeholders and source system owners to resolve data quality issues as appropriate; and cleaning and creating final data set(s) for analysis.
Gathers data and information on targeted variables in an established systematic fashion by validating data sources; querying, merging, and extracting data across internal and external sources; completing routine data refresh and update; developing and/or delivering complex tools for electronic data collection; and providing user training, support, and documentation.
Drives strategic data-informed decisions by consulting with clients and leadership to identify and clarify key business needs across functional areas, business and/or clinical lines; developing outcomes and process measures; translating business requirements; determining data/information needs and data collection methods; developing complex analysis plans; evaluating the impact of business decisions on clients, customers, and/or members; partnering with clients and staff to identify opportunities and methods to improve efficiencies with analysis; supporting and training end-users; and documenting processes and deliverables.
