Job Description

dunnhumby is the global leader in Customer Data Science, empowering businesses everywhere to compete and thrive in the modern data-driven economy. We always put the Customer First.

Our mission: to enable businesses to grow and reimagine themselves by becoming advocates and champions for their Customers. With deep heritage and expertise in retail – one of the world’s most competitive markets, with a deluge of multi-dimensional data – dunnhumby today enables businesses all over the world, across industries, to be Customer First.

dunnhumby employs nearly 2,500 experts in offices throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas working for transformative, iconic brands such as Tesco, Coca-Cola, Meijer, Procter & Gamble and Metro.

This is a unique opportunity for a PhD student to work in our London Data Science team on a 3-month Internship, exploring technical tools and algorithms in the field of data ethics, particularly around fairness and transparency.

The internship will be a mix of desk research and hands-on data science using in-house and/or synthetic data sources. The intern will research techniques and packages to understand current metrics and test on ‘real-world’ data. We would also expect the intern to participate actively in our Data Science community, e.g. by giving a talk on their research or another relevant topic.

We will provide induction training and continuous support throughout the placement.

Expected Outcomes

Our objective for this placement is to deliver a process by which our future data science solutions will be assessed. The intern will produce a report, with recommendations, on the strengths and weaknesses of these tools and potential benefit to dunnhumby.

Supervision and Mentorship

The Data Scientist intern will work in the Applied Data Science team in our Brook Green office. The intern will be a member of our Data Science community – both Research and Applied - to provide them with a network of colleagues for support and learning.

Person Specification

The ideal intern will have a passion for Data Science with a questioning mindset.

Essential skills:

  • Experience building predictive machine learning models in Python
  • Knowledge of data ethics issues and a desire to build metrics to assess them

Desirable skills:

  • Knowledge of different data ethics frameworks
  • Experience of large real world datasets
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to explain technical issues to a non-technical audience
