Job Description

The Research Scientist II, with limited guidance from more experienced scientists, works individually and in collaboration with others on multiple projects which are moderate to complex in scope. The Research Scientist II plays an active role or leads in the planning of projects and experiments, and is often the technical lead responsible for the successful execution of the project. This position involves independently making detailed observations, analyzing data, interpreting results, and providing insights into the next steps of the project.

Working in a team setting, the Research Scientist II will be involved in Research and Development projects serving as a technical lead or a subject matter expert in translating research ideas and concepts into the product development pipeline towards development of diagnostic assay products.

Essential Duties

include but are not limited to the following:

  • Design and develop software.
  • Test software applications and systems.
  • Working in an agile Scrum software development environment.
  • Apply knowledge of computing systems and software structure.
  • Analyze users' needs.
  • Create flowcharts, diagrams, and other documentation.
  • Create manuals and detailed sets of instructions including algorithms that tell computers what to do.
  • Convert instructions into computer languages.
  • Construct, deploy, and maintain general computer applications software or specialized utility programs.
  • Use Python.
  • Develop packaged computer applications.
  • Develop databases.
  • Coordinate the construction and maintenance of computer systems.
  • Able to organize and maintain flexibility.
  • Provide support and guidance for peer programmers.
  • Design R&D prototyping.
  • Work collaboratively with software testers.
  • Uphold company mission and values through accountability, innovation, integrity, quality, and teamwork.
  • Support and comply with the company’s Quality Management System policies and procedures
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 80% of a typical working day.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in natural sciences, preferably life sciences, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, chemical/physical/biological science, or related field; or Master’s degree in life sciences, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, chemical/physical/biological science, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in professional software development.
  • 3+ years of professional experience with Python.
  • Good understanding of backend and frontend development concepts
  • Experience with ORM concepts
  • Understanding of basic CI/CD concepts and experience applying them in practice

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in life sciences, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, chemical/physical/biological science, or related field; or Master’s degree in life sciences, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, chemical/physical/biological science, or related field
  • 4+ years of experience in professional software development
  • 5+ years of professional experience with Python
  • 2+ years of experience in data science
  • Working in a scrum environment for software development
  • Hands on experience with cloud development, especially AWS (EC2, S3, ECS, RDS, and Lambda)
  • Familiarity with Docker, experience with development and deployment of containerized applications
  • Experience with workflow management systems (e.g. Apache Airflow)
