The Blackstone Legal & Compliance department seeks a mid-level attorney to support Blackstone’s privacy, data protection and security and information risk management programs, and to address regulatory and legal issues arising from Blackstone’s development of data repositories and its business use and acquisition of market and alternative data. The role will focus on assisting existing team members across multiple business groups and supporting privacy and data protection compliance programs associated with enterprise corporate compliance.

Primary job responsibilities include:

The Data Science Associate will work on a wide range of legal and compliance matters within the data policy and strategy team, particularly in relation to the firm’s acquisition and use of data assets and technology and data platforms. Primarily job responsibilities include:

  • Provide broad support for the market data, alternative data and technology and data platform acquisition teams, consistent with applicable laws and regulations (with particular focus on the U.S., U.K, and European Union)
  • Review data licensing terms, due diligence responses, licenses, contracts, and other submissions and reporting documents from a legal, regulatory and compliance perspective
  • Assist in maintaining compliance policies, processes and standards, including maintenance of data acquisition, use and distribution compliance programs and data inventories
  • Assist in assessing current and future applicable legal and compliance developments and communicating these updates to legal, compliance and business personnel
  • Preparing and conducting training regarding legal and compliance issues related to privacy, data protection, information governance and data acquisition, use and distribution.
  • Work collaboratively and productively with lawyers, compliance professionals and business professionals within Blackstone and externally to achieve successful outcomes
  • Help ensure compliance with global data privacy, data acquisition, information risk management and data security laws and regulations and firm policies
  • Provide support for the review, preparation and adherence to third-party agreements and engagement letters
  • Review anonymization, pseudonymization and aggregation proposals and practices, as well as data science models and internally developed products to ensure compliance with firm-wide policies and practices, and evolving legal and regulatory requirements
  • Assist with other day-to-day legal and compliance matters and processes as needed

Qualifications:

Blackstone seeks to hire individuals who are highly motivated, intelligent, and have demonstrated excellence in prior endeavors. The successful candidate should have:

  • An attorney with 2+ years of experience at a law firm and/or as a compliance professional
  • Ability to work in an extremely fast-paced environment related to a growing and global business;
  • Knowledge of global data privacy regimes including GDPR, CCPA, GLBA, FCRA, global legal and regulatory data transfer mechanisms and data de-identification and pseudonymization techniques;
  • Understanding of trademark and copyright law as applied to data acquisition and use is desired;
  • Understanding of cloud technology, SaaS environments, big data, and legal, regulatory and ethical aspects associated with algorithmic decision-making and machine learning;
  • Critical attention to detail and analytical skills;
  • Strong drafting and organizational skills;
  • Ability to communicate confidently and effectively;
  • Ability to work independently while remaining a strong team player;
  • Intelligent and ability to understand difficult, complex compliance and business issues; and
  • High initiative, creativity and drive.
