Job Description

For us, it is cutting-edge technology. For our customers and competitors, it is magic.

For example, our team builds and maintains models and optimization algorithms to support the Fleet Optimization Solutions product (https://www.wartsila.com/voyage/fos)

We are now looking for a Data Scientist to join our Data Science team in Optimization group at the Helsinki Office in Finland!

What Will Be Your Objectives?

We gain insight into ship operations by analyzing large amounts of data that are being continuously collected. The insight generates value for our customers through our fuel efficiency improving software applications.

Your role will be to create and maintain advanced statistical modeling and optimization software. Our modeling methodology is founded on the combination of physics, hands-on knowledge of seafarers, and insight gained by exploring the data. The computational models are utilized onboard ships by our applications as a basis for optimization. In addition, our customers improve the efficiency of ship operations from visualizations and analytics based on these models evaluated in our data center.

As statistical models form an integral part of our software stack, you will be end-to-end responsible from carrying out the proof-of-concept studies behind the modeling problems to all the way taking the findings into a production quality data processing software.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you should have a Ph.D. degree in a relevant field such as Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or a related discipline.

The potential candidate must possess the unrestricted right to work in Finland.

Skills we are looking for (a successful candidate will have some of these):

  • Statistical modeling expertise (Bayesian Regression, Gaussian Processes, Kalman/Particle Filtering, DSP, non-linear optimization methods, ...)
  • Physics expertise, especially in hydrodynamics
  • Strong programming skills in Python, with experience in implementing statistical models using libraries such as NumPy, pandas, Scipy, and scikit-learn
  • Experience with software development practices and managing large codebases
  • Experience with git, Linux, CI, Docker, etc.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment

Why you and us?

Our team is a mature agile team with 7 members with expertise in math, physics, software development, and analytics, in varying proportions. We give each member the independence to experiment with their own approaches. We value transparency and believe in an agile way of working where members regardless of their seniority or backgrounds can have an equal impact on the team’s decision-making. Moreover, by joining our team, you will have the chance to continuously improve your skills and advance your career to new heights.

We hope that you are as passionate about data science and ensuring good code quality as we are. We value diversity and appreciate difficult discussions, sincere and straightforward feedback, and challenges to the status quo. We hope that you share these values as well! Additionally, we hope you are comfortable working both independently and in cooperation with other team members. Besides professional work, we also enjoy each other's company and sometimes hang out after work if schedule and family life allow.

Our team primarily works remotely, but we make an effort to gather once a week at the Helsinki office.

In addition, by joining our team, you can contribute to build technology that matters:

  • Implement IoT-based technology on vessels the size of small cities
  • Build something you can be proud of beyond your professional life. Your work directly affects the CO2 emissions of a fleet of hundreds, or possibly thousands of ocean-going ships.
  • Participate in building products that are used onboard by the captains themselves
