Job Description

The Head of Data Science is a leadership role, where you will be accountable in leading our data science operations and teams to provide leadership and direction. You will drive innovation, optimise processes, and align with our business objectives. Additionally, you will manage and continue to build a high-performing team of data scientists, while fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation and growth, in a product mindset environment. Identifying and monitoring key business risks and realising the data needs of the business will be embedded into role. While overseeing activities and delivery, you will ensure alignment within the department and business-wide vision and strategies.

Responsibilities:

Business Acumen & Leadership:

• Stay abreast with industry trends and competitive landscape to make informed decisions; actively contribute to our business model.
• Develop a strategic vision for the data science department that aligns with both short-term goals and long-term growth objectives.
• Able to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders with equal ease.

Operations & Program Management:

• Design and implement efficient data science operations, ensuring optimal resource allocation and alignment with commercial goals.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with other teams to ensure seamless integration of data science solutions and synergies across the organisation, especially across Engineering and IT Infrastructure practices.
• Oversee end-to-end program management of data science projects, from ideation to execution, ensuring high-quality deliverables on time and within budget.

Team Building & Mentoring:

• Recruit, onboard, and lead a diverse team of data scientists, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.
• Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities to nurture future data science leaders within the organisation.
• Guiding the team through the execution of their duties and encouraging their professional growth.

Innovation & Forward Thinking:

• Stay abreast of emerging trends and advancements in data science and AI, identifying opportunities for innovation and integration into our business model.
• Continually evaluate models, especially those using GenAI, to have a Champion-Challenger evaluation.
• Encourage a mindset of continuous improvement and experimentation within the data science team to drive innovative solutions.

Technical Skills:

• Proficiency in machine learning techniques, including supervised and unsupervised learning, feature engineering, and model evaluation from a perspective to guide the team and their deliverables.
• Strong understanding of data ethics, privacy considerations, and regulatory compliance in data-driven projects.
• Experience on building products centred around Data Science, especially B2B enterprise SaaS, will be advantageous.

Must have

• Advanced degree in a relevant field such as Data Science, Machine Learning, Computer Science, or Engineering.
• Proven track record of successfully leading and managing large data science teams, including team building, talent development, and performance management.
• Strong experience in end-to-end data science project management, with a deep understanding of technology and its applications.
• Demonstrated business acumen, ability to align data science initiatives with commercial objectives, and drive impactful business outcomes.
• Extensive experience in AI and machine learning technologies, with a keen eye for innovative and cutting-edge solutions.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, with the ability to inspire and mentor team members.

Nice to have

• Demonstrated expertise in AI technologies, natural language processing, and deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
• Knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and their data services.
• Proficiency in using version control systems like Git for collaborative coding.
• Familiarity with big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark) and distributed computing concepts.
• Programming skills in as Python or R and experience with data manipulation & analysis using libraries like Pandas, NumPy, and scikit-learn.
• Hands-on experience with data visualization tools like Matplotlib, PowerBI or Tableau.
• Ability to design and implement scalable data pipelines and data preprocessing workflows.
