The Intellectual Property – Patents Group of Alston & Bird has an immediate opening for a patent agent with 2+ years’ experience in the computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering sectors.
The position can be located in our Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh, or Silicon Valley offices and involves working with inventors and attorneys to prepare and prosecute patent applications directed to emerging technologies.
Candidates must be able to identify inventions through technical discussions with inventors, perform novelty and clearance searches to distinguish inventions from the current state of the art, draft comprehensive patent applications, work with attorneys to negotiate the scope of rights afforded by patent applications with the Patent Office, and prepare reports and other support documentation to assist in the management of patent portfolios.
A Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Mechanical Engineering is required.
Relevant technical experience in data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, wireless communications, sensors, Internet of Things, or equivalent sectors is a plus. Strong technical skills and excellent writing skills are required.
2+ years prior experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications as a registered patent agent before the USPTO is preferred.
Ideal candidates must have exceptional attention to technical detail, effective communication and organizational skills, and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
