Alston & Bird is seeking a Data Analytics Intern to assist our Data Scientist. The position of Data Analytics Intern will support in building the technical groundwork for analytics within the firm. This will involve collaborating with various practice groups and departments to understand their needs and identify opportunities where analytics tools can address challenges and improve workflow. The Data Analytics Intern will support analytics projects ranging from conducting statistical analysis on firm data to creating applications that leverage machine learning models for predictive tools. Additionally, the Data Analytics Intern will assist in evaluating third-party analytics products to vet the quality of the product. The Data Analytics Intern will be a part of presentations to management and attorneys and encourage engagement with emerging technology within the firm. This role could be 100% remote, based on the working style of the candidate.

Essential Duties

• Work with in-house Data Scientist to serve as a subject-matter expert on various analytics projects such as data analysis, and machine learning
• Assist in providing technical expertise throughout Alston & Bird as needed
• Partner with business and technical teams on data integration projects to establish procedures and approaches for structured and unstructured data.
• Manage the development of data management and advanced analytics using the firm’s business intelligence tools for client engagements, practice management and other firm initiatives.
• Support the design and management of analytics projects that address business challenges and firm needs when vendor solutions are not available
• Work with the Data Scientist to implement Natural Language Processing (NLP) machine learning models for text classification or entity recognition tasks
• Evaluate and assess third-party analytics products in terms of their quality and applicability to the needs of various Practice Groups
• Share the findings of analytics projects with team and department managers
• Monitor legal industry news, trends and follow changes in vendor developments and roadmaps
• Ensure transparency and timely communication to the Data Scientist for all projects, initiatives, and issues
• Performs other tasks and duties as assigned

Skills Needed to be Successful

• Basic knowledge of Python and SQL
• Experience using statistical analysis packages including Pandas, NumPy, and SkLearn
• Experience using NLP techniques and concepts
• Experience with Power BI or other data visualization software is preferred
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
• Excellent communication skills are critical as the Data Analytics Intern must be able to clearly articulate complex concepts to both business users and project teams
• Demonstrated aptitude to learn new software and technical concepts

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Required:

• Bachelors in computer science, analytics, engineering, math, statistics, data science or a related discipline
• Masters in progress in computer science, analytics, data science, or a related field

Preferred:

• Some work experience in professional and/or legal services industry
