Wildfire has caused significant economic losses in recent years and led to numerous environmental changes including an extended period of drought, loss of vegetation and alteration of soil properties. In this position, you will have an opportunity to directly work on a wildfire modeling that helps insurance companies to assess and manage risks. The role includes developing and enhancing damage estimation by wildfire for insurance portfolios by incorporating knowledge of wildfire mitigation, insurance regulations and state legislation. The candidate will work closely with a team of engineers, scientists, statisticians, and specialists in the research department. Candidate best suited for this position is expected to be highly motivated and detail-oriented team player with sophisticated problem-solving skills.

Main responsibilities

  • Analyze wildfire data to build basis for wildfire damage and loss estimation
  • Build vulnerability models to assess damage to buildings, infrastructures, and industrial facilities subjected to wildfires as well as wildfire smoke
  • Represent Verisk to explain view of risks to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Author technical writing for internal and external publications

Qualifications

  • Master with 3-4 years of related experience or PhD degree in Agricultural, Civil, Fire Protection, Mechanical, or other relevant engineering disciplines.
  • Knowledge of wildfire risk mitigation, wildfire related insurance regulations and state legislation
  • Hands-on experience in fire risk assessment or post-fire damage assessment
  • Proficient in programming with Python, R or similar. C++ programming capability is a plus
  • Demonstrated experience in statistical and probabilistic modeling
  • Familiarity of GIS data process, analysis, and visualization
  • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written mediums with technical and non-technical audiences
