Job Description

We are looking for a Bioinformatics Data Scientist with multi-omics data analysis and integration experience for the Early-Stage Research (ESR) Team within Syngenta’s Product Safety function (PS). Our focus is on providing predictions, insights and data on the behaviour of new active ingredients (chemicals and biologicals) to bring safety and sustainability to the heart of our invention activities. This information is used by cross-functional projects inventing new active ingredients to meet society’s needs. The level of contribution we need is a graduate in Bioinformatics, Computational Science, Data Science or Statistics with post-graduate experience or qualifications in the application of Bioinformatics. As a key member of our team, you will provide technical leadership in Bioinformatics specifically the analysis of multi-omic data that help to predict the impact of new chemicals on human health and the environment.

Role purpose

  • Design and apply integrative data analysis (computational/statistical/causal) and visualisation techniques for multi-omic (transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics) data to address research hypotheses focusing on safety
  • Develop, test and support data analysis tools and pipelines in collaboration with key partners
  • Seek out latest analysis and visualisation techniques and assess their potential use to support ESR activities

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with scientists within Syngenta to process and analyse, in-house and public domain multi-omic datasets to enable chemical prioritisation
  • Collaborate with experimentalists, statisticians and scientists to design and deliver robust and multi-omic studies
  • Understand transcriptomic, metabolomics and proteomic workflows, data structure and potential data analysis approaches to efficiently integrate and/or develop, analysis and visualisation protocols,
  • Contribute to data management processes and solutions for capturing and exploiting omics data
  • Work with contract organisations and/or academic collaborators to define and develop solutions/tools/workflows to support Syngenta Scientists
  • You will work with, and contribute to, the Bioinformatics community at Syngenta
  • Liaise with environmental fate, toxicology, ecotoxicology and modelling scientists to understand requirements and define multi-omic data analysis solutions
  • Support Syngenta’s scientific credibility within the wider scientific and regulatory communities
  • Network within Syngenta and the external bioinformatics community to ensure best use of resources and opportunities

Critical Experience & Skills:

  • You are likely to be educated to PhD degree level in Bioinformatics, Computational Science, Data Science or Statistics or a Graduate with relevant experience
  • You will have experience in integration and harmonising multi-omics datasets e.g., using network-based, graph modelling, dimensionality reduction or machine learning approaches.
  • Track record of processing and deriving novel insights from integrative analysis of multi-omic datasets
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex data to a non-expert
  • Proficiency in R or Python for data analysis and programming
  • Experience in visualising complex analyses (eg. R Shiny)
  • Broad understanding of using in vitro biological systems for predictive toxicology is desirable but not essential
