Job Description

Western Digital System Software Research Group is seeking motivated engineers interested in open-source software development and testing to join a team of experienced engineers working on open-source Linux kernel development in the area of storage systems (Block IO layer, NVMe, SCSI and ATA subsystems, File Systems, Device mapper, etc).

The position responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following tasks:

  • Maintain and develop our internal Linux test suite
  • Identify and resolve Linux kernel and application problems found during testing. Fixes are contributed back to various open-source projects, including Linux kernel.
  • Evaluate and improve the support for various advanced storage system features in different Linux distributions. Improvements are contributed to the Linux distribution projects as new packages or package updates.
  • General maintenance, test and development of various open-source projects such as the Linux kernel, user libraries and utilities and applications.
  • Help manage our test hardware deployment in our laboratory

Most of the tasks involve working with and contributing to open-source projects.

Qualifications

The candidate MUST:

  • Have a very good command of English communication. Our team is globally located, and English is the common language used. Most open-source projects also use English as the common language.
  • Have experience using Linux environments: system management, application development and debugging.
  • Know how to manage source code based on GIT
  • Strong C development and bash scripting skills

The following skills are a plus:

  • Experience with both unit level and top level verification
  • Knowledge of widely used storage interfaces and protocols: SCSI, ATA, and NVMe
  • Strong team player who can collaborate with colleagues and open-source developers worldwide
